FRANKFURT -(Dow Jones)- Deutsche Lufthansa AG said Friday it's canceling its service between Frankfurt and Phoenix, Arizona from Feb. 1.
Instead, Germany's flag carrier plans to serve Germans' appetite for vacationing in the American Southwest by utilizing flights from its Star Alliance partners, UAL Corp.'s United Airlines and US Airways , spokeswoman Sandra Kraft said.
"It's purely for financial reasons," Kraft said. "The route was not as profitable, as it should be."
Lufthansa began flying to Phoenix in March 2001, but during the economic downturn, some German companies that had planned to use the service ended up pulling out of the U.S. city.
Arizona is still a hot spot for German tourists, Kraft said. "But the business traffic hasn't been as high as we had originally planned for."
