Taking landside shops and moving 'em airside... seems we're bucking the trent
Of course, all of this would only be considered should the quasi-mythical 4th and 5th runways be built... but MSY is considering going crazy with airside shop capacity, including a retail-based extension of Concourse D in the west terminal, and an all-new terminal to the north.

"As part of a planned expansion, Concourse D will be widened and designed with airside retail in mind, Williams said. Once complete, the percentage of airside retail operations will rise to 60 percent."
The only real "widening" of the existing concourse D would be to knock out a couple of walls, and put in retail outlets. Looks like we'll be widening the extension, probably not much due to ramp clearances on the southwest side, which is due to begin construction in early 2005.
There's not much room for additional landside retail, however some of the existing landside will become airside when the concourses A and B checkpoints get combined up in the east lobby in the not-too-distant future.
No new terminals coming to MSY, only add-on's.
