LOS ANGELES, Dec. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Tonight, American Airlines launches nonstop flights between Southern California and Puerto Rico. For the first time, passengers will be able to step onto an American widebody aircraft and arrive in beautiful San Juan without having to change planes.
American's new nonstop weekend service offers a choice of Business Class and Coach Class. Passengers choosing to travel in Coach Class will enjoy the carrier's More Room Throughout Coach seating, which boasts additional legroom.

"As part of our efforts to become Southern California's airline of choice, we're working to provide travelers with the products and services they value," said Art Pappas, managing director-LAX for American. "We're complementing our nonstop service to Hawaii with another island getaway option, this time to the east. Puerto Rico presents a host of activities plus plenty of the necessities -- sun and surf."

San Juan also serves as American's gateway to the Caribbean, offering numerous connecting opportunities to destinations from the British Virgin Islands to St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

American's new Los Angeles to San Juan service underscores the breadth of the airline's network, which crisscrosses North America and stretches across Europe, the Caribbean, Latin American and into Asia. American will enhance its Asian presence by launching nonstop service from Los Angeles to Tokyo, Japan, next April.

Attractions awaiting travelers to Puerto Rico include visiting San Felipe Fort "El Morro," a six-level fort overlooking San Juan Bay; Maunabo Lighthouse, with spectacular views of the Caribbean; Hacienda Buena Vista, a working coffee plantation; and the popular Bacardi Tour, during which guests learn how rum is made.

American's new nonstop schedule is:
Los Angeles to San Juan (Fridays and Saturdays only)
Flight Departs Arrives
238 11:45 p.m. 10:30 a.m. (next day)

San Juan to Los Angeles (Saturdays and Sundays only)
Flight Departs Arrives
239 12:15 p.m. 3:44 p.m.


The nonstops will operate weekends from Dec. 20, 2003, through the end of next May. Effective June 1, service will increase to five times a week. American will fly a Boeing 767-300 widebody aircraft featuring seating for 30 Business-Class and 182 Coach-Class passengers.

Business-Class passengers will enjoy a light snack outbound from Los Angeles including rotating choices such as grilled salmon, breaded chicken, roast beef panini or pizza. A full breakfast will be served in the morning featuring entrees such as pancakes with roasted walnut syrup, country cheese omelette or egg quesadilla.

Coach-Class passengers will also enjoy a served meal. Outbound from Los Angeles they will receive a light "midnight" snack. A full breakfast is served in the morning featuring rotating entrees such as French toast, vegetable omelette or egg burritos.

Inbound from San Juan, Business-Class passengers enjoy a deluxe lunch with soup, salad and hot rotating entree choices of plantain crusted turbot, roasted chicken, Puerto Rican pot roast or sauteed shrimp plus American's world renown ice cream sundaes. Coach-Class passengers enjoy a served lunch as well, featuring rotating entree options of lasagna, beef stew, penne piquante or adobo chicken breast.

With the new service to San Juan, American offers nonstop service to 32 destinations from Los Angeles International Airport. The carrier also serves Burbank, Long Beach, Ontario and Orange County airports in the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area.

Connecting service from Los Angeles to San Juan via American's hubs in Dallas/Fort Worth and Miami will also be available on weekends as well as every weekday.

Interesting, but I guess its about time that this route was introduced. Previously, passengers would have to double connect to get to certain destinations in the Caribbean or fly JM.

I believe TWA was flying this daily and later 4x weekly with 757s a couple years before the merger.

If anyone can make it work, AA can. If memory serves me correctly, DL tried it at some point in the early/mid 80s with L1011s. It didn't last very long...even with the hub still intact at LAX.

No one really cares about who the Puerto Ricans want to fly. Travellers originating in Puerto Rico do not generate high yields. That being said, the US-Puerto Rico yields are not too high from most east coast markets. I imagine as one goes further and further west, the yields get better and better. I know that finding a cheap fare from DFW or IAH to PR is damn near impossible. AA also makes a killing off passengers connecting in SJU to Caribbean destinations that are not served by other US airlines.

Delta did fly LAX-SJU in the late 80's. It was NOT an L-1011, rather a B767-300 (Domestic not ER) At the time it was their longest flight (6+ Hours) with the B767-332. I can tell you that the yields were lousy and marketing had the flights overbooked (sometimes by 50-75 people) and Delta still lost money on the flight - The same thing happened with the non-stop MCO-SJU with the L-1011. On vertain nights the flight would be overbooked by 100 pearople and still go out with empty seats. Any DL MCO employee in the early 90's can attest to that. May be AA see's an opportunity here - may be they're gambling...

So what? This is not a first. TWA operated daily 757 service from LAX to SJU when it tried to build a mini focus hub at SJU in the late 1990's.

TWA was flying the route using the 757-200 a few years back and the departure and arrival times were nearly the same!

American Airlines has stated they will be operating the 777-200 from Los Angeles to Tokyo in April.... We will see... This is what .... the 3rd attempt at the entry of the Tokyo route into the market?

American Airlines still holds the traffic right on Boston to Tokyo, what is going on with that?

The intent to fly Boston to Narita came about at the time that Korean Airlines had pulled out of Boston. American if you do not so easily forget stated that they were comitted to the growth of the Boston market!

Yeah, comitted.... Until something else came along... (TWA)

We will see just how long the LAX-AA), Japan">NRT will last!

The intent to fly BOS-NRT may have been there, but you clearly stated that American Airlines still holds the traffic right on Boston to Tokyo.

Intent does not equate to traffic rights. If that was the case, Delta would be running 5 daily ATL-LHR flights.

So I ask you again, do you have any factual basis to assert that American Airlines "still holds the traffic right" on BOS-NRT route, or is this another one of your bedtime fairy tale fantasies.

AA does hold the route authority to operate nonstop BOS-Tokyo since 1998. However, due to the lack of runway slot availability at Narita, they chose not to operate the service. AA also won ORD-Tokyo, JFK-Tokyo and DFW-KIX in this agreement with Japan. They only started the ORD-Tokyo and DFW-KIX flights. The additional Narita slots had to be leased from FedEx. At the same time in 1998, the Asian financial crisis occurred and AA lacked enough long range aircraft as its MD11 fleet was dwindling and the 777 had not yet arrived. Thus, AA did not pursue the JFK and BOS to Tokyo flights. The ORD-Tokyo and DFW-KIX markets struggled. ORD-Tokyo has since become a solid operation. Shortly after 9/11, AA decided to end its loss making SEA-Tokyo and DFW-KIX service. In 2002 Narita opened a second runway,Delta pulled back its flying to Tokyo from LAX, PDX &JFK and AA had the SEA-Narita runway slots which allowed it to start the JFK-Tokyo service. The LAX-Tokyo service was announced in 2002 to begin in Spring 2003. The SARS crisis again hampered AA's plans and the LAX-Tokyo service was postponed as AA could not afford to invest in a money bleeding route start-up in early 2003. It takes an airline some time to develop a market financially. AA recently announced it would start the LAX-Tokyo service in Spring 2004 - so this would only be its second announcement about its first attempt at the LAX-Tokyo market. Overall, the LAX and JFK service to Tokyo complements AA's route structure and should be successful in the long run. The large AA operations and frequent flyer base in LAX and JFK almost guarantee the success of service linking these primary airports - although they may take some time to mature.

The SJC-CDG/TPE routes failed due to a combination of the 9/11 crisis and the Dot.com bomb in silicon valley eliminating high yielding traffic.

The LAX-CDG service suffered from low yields and was constantly being tinkered with from year round to seasonal. TW and UA have also had problems with this market.

AA is not unique in the airline industry for trying new markets and withdrawing when they are not successful. I don't think it is called falling flat on their face. If airlines never took risks at new operations, they would not grow. If they find a market is not performing as well as they like, they retreat and stop losing money. It is a pretty simple business equation.

DL and TW have bother operated LAX-SJU service in the past. AA is operating this service to attract passengers who are going on upscale Caribbean holidays and not the low-yield VFR or Vacation type traffic. As the service is not daily, and AA already has large operations in both LAX and SJU, the start up costs are low and it will let the traffic level determine how successful the service is.

Other markets AA has announced and later dropped as aircraft availability, traffic forecasts and market conditions changed include Chicago - Warsaw/Helsinki/Amsterdam/Moscow and New York-Barcelona. AA has also withdrawn from plenty of other domestic/international markets.
AA has in the past served Lyon, Stuttgart, Berlin, Munich, Dusseldorf, Stockholm, Milan, Geneva, Hamburg, Osaka, London-Stansted, Birmingham. I believe United, Northwest and Continental have also served a variety of international destinations that they later withdrew from.

You are correct on all accounts. Milan Malpensa and Rome Fiumicino just dont seem the same without the presence of TWA. Now in Milan Malpensa there are a ton of new airlines... no joke! Now in Rome, American Airlines has held on and is doing outstanding on its daily Rome to Chicago and Rome to New York during the summer season!

At the time that TWA pulled out of the Italian market it was a hug suprise The market had been been served for ages! TWA, and BOAC were the founding airlines that lent support to create what is now known as Alitalia!

In a recent conversation with some very interesting aviation enthusiasts in Milano, the topic has come up as to why American Airlines has not served Amsterdam! Is this due to the strong presence that they have invested in Belgium. They in 2004 in addition to Chicago-Brussels will operate a New York-Brussels service!

American Airlines has expressed interest in returning to Milan/Malpensa, however the airline is in no shape to reopen a dorment route. The airline, would more than likely re-introduce service from New York vs. Chicago. Alitalia has taken Chicago when it comes to service to Malpensa!

What is the current situation with New York-Barcelona? The route was due to be operated in 2003... nothing came about it. It was then stated that it would return in 2004!

Believe it or not, Lhr001 is actually right. They do hold the authority. They hold a plethora of unused route authorities, including Miami-Barcelona, JFK-Barcelona, Boston-Tokyo, even Miami-Malaga, to name a few.

Having worked for a major cruise line before, I imagine a good portion of these seats are already spoken for by the various cruise lines operating out of SJU. On a plus note for AA, they can sell the seats they have a higher prices, and all the cargo is a bonus.

i go to Puerto Rico a lot because my moms family lives there. I recall a while back seeing a AA 767-200 at a gate that said AA flight something to LAX this was about 1995. Parked next to it was a BA DC-10 on its way to Miami then to JFK then on to LHR.

Also, how come AA pulled out of JFK-TLV when they bought TW? I read somewhere that this was one of TW's biggest money maker routes and it took everyone by surprise when AA pulled out.

Eastern Airlines (EA) flew LAX-SJU nonstop in the 1980's too. My girlfriend worked as a gate agent for them and they had an even flight to SJU from LAX.
