UL 330 On CMB-MAA-CMB

Although scheduled to be an A320, does UL use its A330s on its CMB-MAA-CMB service? If so, how frequently? Is the route sufficiently demanded to warrant a permanent A330?

IC sends out a daily A300 and is one of the few ruotes where an A300 is preferred. So i guess there must be traffic!

Remember that Tamils from the state of Tamil Nadu have historic lnks with tamils on the Island.

I realise that IC uses its AB3s on its daily MAA-CMB-MAA service. But I was asking about UL - not IC - who use 320s.

Incidentally, IC also use its AB3s on its COK-SHJ service.

I'm sure there's enough traffic between CMB and MAA to fill a 747 daily! I should think the reason for UL not to use a A330 on that route is lack of sufficient a/c.
By the way, has UL recovered from the loss of almost half its fleet in the LTTE attack on CMB airport ? Isn't it true that lost something like six A/C, mostly A33s and A34s?

Yes, the MAA-CMB route would support a 1000-1200 seats in each direction easily, based on historical as well as research data. Higher during festivals, monsoons and holidays, which is when "additional" flights are operated, or using higher capacity aircraft. One reason for larger capacity aircraft, as different from more number of smaller capacity aircraft, is that regardless of aircraft turn-around time, Customs formalities would take an hour or more, easily.

On the replacement aircraft, am made to understand that the answer is "yes", they acquired them.

UL operates the A330 xxx times a week on the CMB-MAA-CMB sector. Apart from the strong 3/4th freedom traffic on this sector, UL is a strong participant in 6th freedom traffic as well. They offer free stopovers in CMB for passengers connecting to onward points from CMB if the transit hours are lengthy besides having a very attractive fares package. UL attracts a lot of the labour traffic to Gulf and Middle East from Southern India on their services. Labour traffic being extremely price sensitive, opts for the lowest available fares irrespective of the time taken to get to the destination and the number of transits involved. UL's deals in the Southern India market especially Tamil Nadu and Southern Andhra Pradesh area of Cuddappah are extremely competitive and they give every single carrier from the Gulf and Middle East (besides AI and IC) a run for their money. Coupled with competitive pricing, their excellent service standards make them a formidable challenge for other airlines operating from South India.

Please read my first line of my earlier post (no.5 above) as "UL operates the A330 CMB/MAA/CMB usually on 1/3/5 depending on the loads". Other flights may also see changes to A330 from A320 but this is the service most likely to see A330s.

They aren't scheduled, anyway, at least according to Amadeus.

Days 1,3,5 are listed as EQV for UL122. So the likelyhood of A330s coming in are particularly high on those dates. Plus with the open skies on upto 29FEB04, UL has been another carrier who has been particularly active in sending in A330s into their biggest market in India.

Sorry, V, I totally misread what I saw on Amadeus. Indeed, UL will apparently operate, for the next week at least, its 340s into MAA on W and F (UL121) and its 330s on M (UL121).

*Remembers flying on UL many times* Superb airline.
