I went to pick my friend up from the airport today and noticed that there was this sticker attached to the tag on his checked bag. It looked like a flashlight with a beam coming out of each side, and had some kind of transmitter or magnet in the middle. What is this?

Was it a Delta flight to FL?

I know that last spring Delta was testing a new baggage tracking system on some flights to Florida. The system allows the airline to find the exact position of any bag (with the new tags) at any time(I'm not sure if it can in-flight though). I believe I read about it in USA TODAY so you may be able to find more information on their website.

Yes, it was a DL 767 flight from JAX-ATL (gotta love Delta's short haul widebody flights!  Smile)

Delta was using the JAX-ATL run to test out a new bagtag system. I believe that it has gone very well, and The Boston Globe's Travel Section has reported that Delta will make an announcement in January stating that these new tags will be the new ones in the system.

They're just gonna slap this sticker on the bag? Seems like they would need some kind of barcode still.
