JFK Spotting In Code Orange

I was wondering if anyone knew if one could still go to the customs parking lot next to 13L/31R and spot with the orange alert right now. I am in town from LA the next week so I really wanted to go and spot there this weekend, but I was worried about getting booted out. (I know it's definitely not a problem without the "orange" alert.) Thanks.

I wondered the same, Pizzapolli. Given my background, it may be raise concerns for the authorities. But then again, it is the principle. Same dilemma that made me write the following article http://www.airliners.net/articles/read.main?id=56 in a.net. I am interested in knowing what others here think.

If you do spot, good luck! I have tried the AirTrain -- you can get pretty good view of the tarmac from several points.

I'm not sure you're really allowed to spot there, I just think most cops don't care. I know of people who have been kicked out of there with less than code orange conditions, just cause the cop said they couldn't stand there. I'd say go for it, and if you get approached, be very friendly and understanding and help the situation. If nothing, it still might give the cop the notion that planespotters are weird, but at least we can be nice...

I can not advise on JFK but they (Police) shut down the parking lot at IND under the 23R approach. It was open up to a couple nights ago.

Jacob,

Thanks for the compliment. The usual readers are spotters like us. I sent it to a few newspapers, but no response  Sad Anyway, thanks for your encouragement.

Happy Holidays.

the custom area is always open and no one cares unless if a police man happens to pass by on the road on the other side of the fence if you dont have a camrea nothing will happen.

you should be ok there, They usually only tell you not to take pictures from there. I've have been asked to put my camera away but not asked to leave. Now for photo's I go to the Costco parking lot.

JFK is a little rougher to spot at than some of the other Intl AP's in the US. JFK/LGA/EWR are 3 of the hottest targets for the Terrorists and the fuzz will be all over you just like they are now at LAX.

You cannot take anything for granted at EWR, JFK or LGA.

Where you may have been allowed to continue your hobby a week ago, can be off limits the next time you visit. All the usual spots..whether it be Costco, Customs, Monorail, whatever, have had people ejected at one time or another.

Absolutely wonderful piece! I just left a lengthy comment note in the article section. I feel you have spoken for so many of us!  Smile

Have you sent your article to any aviation-related magazines, such as Airways? I realize that may be like "preaching to the choir," but it still may help get the opinion out there.

THE FUZZ! LOLOLOLOLOLOL

But JFk, the Customs Building is a palce i've been kicked out of. They flip about cameras, even though it's perfectly legal to take pictures, but since technically that lot is not public, they can make their own rules for kicking you out on it, but I never heard the specific "Its ok if you dont pull a camera".

Although I do have videos I took of me standing on a car with 31R landings.
