ATA: Can They Make These Seats Any Narrower?

Just got off LAX-MDW redeye. 6 across 757, but the seats were like infant car seats. is this normal seat pattern for a 757 or is ATA just really trying to pack them in. i mean, i am all for low cost, but i'd like some air between my shoulders and they 2 people next to me.

I dont believe the seats are any narrower than any other 757's Economy seats...I was recently on an ATA 757-200 from DEN-MDW and the seats didnt feel any narrower than other 752's Ive flown in Y...

Well, you might have a legitimate complaint in an aircraft where they fit an extra seat abreast, but that's not the case in the 757.

Sometimes when you have very little leg room, you feel the seat to be narrower because the space does not allow one to maneuver around very much. That may be the case here. ATA has same seat width, but the pitch is definitely stringy for any airline.

I feel that is the case for all aircraft actually.

From looking at all the interiors of our planes, the seats on each model seem to be pretty standard. The Boeing narrowbodies measure 139" window to window inside....figuring a std 17" aisle...that leaves 20-20.5" per seat incl armrests....believe there are only 2 seat mfrs and I haven't seen any differences in those in 727's, 738's or 757's...the seats in the F100/M80 give about a half inch more...a coach 767 seat has 22" width and so on. IMHO, this is the one area the airframe builders really need to work on....the A320's only advantage on the 737 is it's slightly wider diameter fuselage, but that 6" makes a difference....time for a 150" narrow, which would allow just over 22" width. The big issue in seating comfort isn't really leg room (unless you're over about 6'4"), but elbow room. On a long flt, being able to raise yr arms a little is a big deal...if that increase in comfort were implemented, I think the need for IFE to keep yr mind off yr discomfort would be diminished)
...folks are getting bigger, and some changes nn to be made....and REALLY needs to be addressed in the cute little Barbie Jets, both Jungle and Arctic...(ps...if you really wanna talk squeeze, you shoulda seen the interiors of Sun Country's D10's....10 across for 380 seats!)

US Airways claims the width of their 752s are 17.1 inches. So where is ATA putting that little extra room? Unless, of course, they rounded.

I have news for you, that's standard Y class seating. 17'' seats and 32'' pitch is average.
ATA hs 17'' seats and 30"-33" pitch so I'de call that average.

If 32" is "average", then I guess it would depend on how many of those 17" seats were at 30" and how many were at 33", as to whether or not it was average. Or even comfortable.

From my experience.....and I may not be the perfect critic,since I (a) have very long legs and (b) like WN.....but my flights on ATA have all seemed pretty cramped. I'd venture to guess that the seat pitch anywhere close to where I was sitting was 30".

Could it be that ATA offers 33" pitch at exit rows (where I have never gotten to sit on board one of their aircraft) and 30" in all other seats.....but they feel that gives them license to state (and without telling a lie) that pitch is 30-33?

For us long legged guys there is a vast difference between 30 and 33.

Well, with all the airlines being hit with multimillion dollar fines for wheelchair handling, maybe they all might need to start putting in wider aisles to accomodate the masses of wheelchair-bound folks who want to fly, and avoid some additional fines down the road.

Needless to say seats on these aircraft/flights are normally quite cheap  Smile

i can def. say that the pitch was on the lower end of 30-33. i have never felt so overwhelmingly cramped on my life, and i usually fly coach and have been on spirit several times mostly w/o complaint.

interestingly, i am a wheelchair user and have to be preboarded in a special aisle chair. the ATA 757 aisles where barely able to accommodate the aisle chair.

I concur- my ATA 752 LAX-MDW was one of tightest ever- until I got Air China's 744 LAX-PEK... much, much worse due to the 9 extra hours to be endured.

The truth is, seating size and legroom varies not only by airline, but by aircraft type. If you don't want to be uncomfortable, you have to really do some research. I believe someone has even compiled a website about this subject, that I read about in the Wall Street Journal, but I don't recall the URL, does anyone know it?

Seat width is, as mentioned above, standard at 17 inches. Since October, the 757-200 aircraft have had 16 fewer seats and pitch runs 32-33 inches throughout. What seat were you in? Any large people around you? Did the person in front of you recline or were you on the bulkhead? Maybe since it was a long red-eye flight it seemed worse than it was? All sorts of little things like that can change your perception of comfort.

I'm not tiny by any means, got a middle seat on a packed 757-200 flight non-reving back from MCO, and was comfortable. I don't think our aircraft are any less comfy than any other coach product out there.

Any other comments on your ATA flights?

But you also need to research the research. Case in point - Consumer reports had a "study" that compared seat width on various airlines. I was in a discussion with the head of NAAFA on another board back when the brouhaha came out about Southwest charging for large size passengers. So she pulled out the report and pointed out that on an American Airlines 737, the "average" seat width was 18.85 inches, compared to Southwest's "industry average" of 17 inches. While the article wasn't incorrect (the "average" was indeed 18.85), but to get that "average" they had to add the First Class seat width of 21 inches to the coach seat width of 16.7 inches, then divide by 2...giving an "average" seat width of that "roomy" 18.85. I pointed out to this person that knowing the "average" was almost 2 inches better than Southwest's "average" (only one seat type...only one width) of 17 inches, it was little comfort when they sat in their coach seat, only to find that it was .3 inches narrower than a Southwest seat.

So take the research with a grain of salt. Since Consumer Reports is usually viewed as the "best" source, and they used average information, then the information actually provided was worth less than the paper it was written on as far a comparisons are concerned.

I guess ATA still has more seats on their 752's than most others. They used to have a capacity of 216. They are all down to 200 now. I imagine a sold out flight was pretty cramped.

ATA aircraft have more seats than the same aircraft type operated by a different airline due to the fact that ATA does not have a premium cabin. Seat pitch (and width) are now industry standard -- and in some cases generous by comparison.
