It has almost been 10 years since I remember United flying to Zurich. Why did they drop the route? Do they ever plan on returning to it? American, Delta, and Continental certainly seem to enjoy serving ZRH.

United did in fact fly IAD-ZRH with a B767-300ER but axed the route in 1994 or 1995. Apparently, the loads were not that good in the premium cabins (not much business travel between Washington DC and Zurich) and so the route was better served through the LH alliance.
Even Swiss had trouble making Washington-Zurich work, and it too has axed the route.
Current US airlines with service to Zurich are:
Continental (Daily from EWR, B767-200ER)
Delta (Daily from ATL, B767-300ER)
American (Daily from JFK and DFW, B767-300ER)

I don't believe CO is currently flying the GVA route daily. I think it is operating 4 or 5 times a week and then over the summer they run it daily if I'm not mistaken. As for LX flying EWR-GVA the flight operates out of JFK. I think EWR just has ZRH..
