Some of the more recent a.net photos of Continental's "Peter Max" Boeing 777-224/ER indicate that the Peter Max scheme will be history soon. Yet some of these photos that mention this go back as far as one year ago, or as far back as two years ago (I think). One thing I know for sure is that these photos, at least 1.5 years old, some newer than others, are misleading. N77014 still wears the "Peter-Max" scheme today. Does anyone know for sure when the Peter Max livery will be history? These people apparently don't have a clue!

I understand the aircraft is scheduled for a D-check in April '04. This will require Mr. Max's artwork to be removed. It will be replaced with CO's standard livery.

A little background if anyone's interested. The Peter Max paint scheme was rolled out in honor of New York City's celebration of the Millennium, because at that time Continental was the official airline of NYC, or more to the point, had paid to be the airline sponsor of NYC & Company, New York City's privately funded (ie no tax dollars) Official Convention and Visitors Bureau, which was coordinating the year 2000 celebrations here in NYC. At some time after that, Delta replaced Continental as the official airline sponsor of NYC & Company (the CVB) and it continues to be as of today.

Ah, Good. Maybe Peter can paint a DL 777 to replace Ship 014.

Bonus Peter Max story for those interested. The artist apparently enjoys dining at Fiorello's restaurant, here on the West Side of Manhattan opposite Lincoln Center. Fiorello's is one of those places where they put paper down on the table and give you a cup of crayons to draw with while you wait for your food. According to a waiter there, one night Max spied a lady he found attractive sitting at another table, and drew a sketch of her. When he walked over to present it to the woman, she turned him away, thinking he was just some old guy who was trying to pick her up. I'm not sure if the waiter told me Max kept it or if it got thrown out, but the lady never realized she'd been sketched by a famous artist for free, and turned it down!!!

I am told that in April 2004, The Boeing 777-224 Airplane Registered as N77014 will go into maintenance for a D-Overhaul Check. At this time, The Current Livery will be stripped and the aircraft primered. All of the seats will be removed and necessary repairs will be made on the interiors, flight deck, and other crucial aircraft systems. Wiring will be inspected from head to toe, The Triple X Aluminum Skin will be X-Rayed and any cracks will be fabricated and repaired. At this time, Continental Airlines will then apply a new coat of paint onto the primered aluminum which will feature Continental Airlines' standard Livery.
I got this from an email from Howard Smith who I guess works in the PR dept.
So photographers, this is your last chance to catch this aircraft.

Got to admit that while I am not a big Max fan, I am a fan of any distinctive and unique airliner livery. In a parade of white tubes, it was always cool to spot this one on approach to EWR.

I must agree with R.V.NYC, 'Mad Max' reminds me of an acid trip in the '60s. But it has certainly been an excellent topic of discussion on many a tongue from the day it first appeared.

Thanks Pl4nekr4zy and simon for the compliment on that photo.
I think that the livery is quite unique if not a tad gaudy however im all for that in airlines making an "example" of one of their aircraft.I love Qantas and south african for it and congrats go to continental too.
If its due a repaint early next year then im glad ive finally had the opportunity to photograph this special one off livery before it leaves us - it took time but i finally got it!

hey
in September i saw the Peter Max 777 in the matnience hangar at EWR and they had all the painting equitment out. I personlley think that CO will put a new paint scheme on the 777 in 04. I mean NWA got a new paint scheme KLM got one as well as DL.

Thanks, guys. Now I know what to expect in the future. Too bad such a beautiful livery must meet its end soon.

Thanks guys for posting the pics. Just wanted to point out that in reply 14, you can clearly see the "NYC 2000" decal I referred to forward of door 1L...Would be nice if CO does another art plane, liveries are getting so generic in general, let's keep our fingers crossed.
