Now, Jetblue needs to add more destinations. They certainly have an edge on IE technology. Way to go!

This is great news especially for the SJU flight were the Direct TV signal goes out halfway through the flight, now at least pax can watch some PPV movies.

Wouldn't one think that J6 makes PPV free so it's an advantage over Song (yes, yes, I know it's called PAY per view)?

Brilliant but personally I wouldn´t pay to watch a movie in a 7 inch TV. I´ll stick on with ESPN and others!

Hmmm, just like Song has. Add the fact that Jetblue is taking out a row of seats to increase legroom and seat pitch, and it kinda makes you wonder who is duplicating who!

The system will most likely not be installed on your flight.

And jetBlue removed the seats due to an FAA Citation that was given to it and several other airlines for not having enough wheelchair stowage space on board... it has nothing to do with song at all.

Brian, you've been sounding increasingly bitter lately, since you left JetBlue. I'm sorry things didn't work out but try to be a little objective. Let's face it, Song would not even exist were it not for JetBlue. The LiveTV upgrades have been in the works for a lot longer than a few months, and the seat pitch issue had been bandied about for at least two years. (It was the higher average FAA passenger weights that finally caused the change, not wheelchairs. The regulatory wheelchair is still stored on seats, not in a special closet.) You should know better.

BTW, I looked for you in TPA earlier this year, but I'm sorry to say we never crossed paths. Best of luck!

I don't know, it depends on the system. DirecTV offers PPV on it's normal systems (home systems) and the feed s from the satellite. It could be that Jetblue is just adding some of those Directv channels, meaning that it would still cut out. On the other hand, it could be more of an AVOD system where you can start the movie when you want. I am not all that familiar with their IFE system though, so I don't know if it even has the technology currently to do this, so I think there would have to be hardware upgrades but I could be wrong. Either way, I think after 6 months we may finally be seeing the reason those swipers were left on the planes.

The reason we took out row 27 was because it didnt recline. It has nothing to do with wheelchair stowage because we still stow them on top of the seats in row 26 - we cover the seats, strap 'em in, and voila! Also, with removing the seats, we now have more weight to play with, for the addition of such things as servers for inflight internet, plus another antenna atop the aircraft (forgot its specific name) but it will allow an additional 24 channels of TV, plus radio, PPV, etc... Keep yours ears open, some exciting news is to come in the next few weeks!!

JetMARC:

Is row 26, or at least one side of row 26, designated like a "crew" area or something? It doesn't seem that teh A320's would have any other place to store wheelchairs, but it doesn't seem like B6 would just let 3 seats go everyflight. Like what happens if the plane's sold out, and there is a wheelchair? Do they have to kick people off, or are those seats just roped off from the beginning?

I don't know if the PPV will be available on the SJU flights. I talked to an agent on 1-800-jetblue, and she said that they were not licensed to use the LiveTV outside the consecutive 48 states, and she also said that they couldn't get a signal on the transoceanic portions of the flight. I hope that this license (or non-license) thing doesn't include PPV. Flights to SJU need some type of entertainment - it's a pretty long flight at 4 hours.

we have no crew rest. And yes, if the pax doesnt wish to have their wheelchair gate checked and returned to the jetway upon arrival (basically, if they insist on having their wheelchair onboard) we will have to bump pax or ask for 3 volunteers from a full flight in order to accommodate an onboard wheelchair in row 26. Also, we're looking into onboard DVDs for flight such as SJU, which would be independent of the satellite system....

If anything, Song is duplicating B6. Let's see - Song competes with JetBlue on almost ALL of their routes, they decided to use IFE and leather seats, and they have almost identical fares.

I see your point when you (basically) say that JetBlue is copying Song by adding more to their IFE. However, since JetBlue OWNS LiveTV (they're the parent company), in previous press releases, they said that they would be able to add many more features such as extra channels.

JetBlue says that they don't do anything extra due to competition, and Song claims the same thing. I think they both do something due to competition - they just don't admit it. Afterall, what airline would admit doing something extra to beat competition?

My point exactly.

No ill will towards Jetblue, but I call it like I see it. I can be objective because I've experienced both. Song has one-uped you guys, and this is a response. Song would do the same if the roles were reversed. As far as the seats go, they've been talking about taking that row out for a long time, even when I was working there, and I'm sure there are other factors. I just have to question the timing of that announcement.

BTW things worked out just fine for me at Jetblue, I moved out of the area. Jetblue was a great experience for me, and I still have many friends there.

It was mostly due to wheelchair storage. Storing them in Row 26 often meant having to bump passengers. They were also fined a large amount by DOT because of lack of wheelchair storage. Though the lack of recline in Row 27 was one reason, so was the fact that it would take off weight (and jetBlue stretchs the 320's range on some of the trans-cons).

Well, if I am correct, Delta's Song offers more legroom because it does not want to add another F/A to the fleet of Boeing 757s. I guess staffing an extra F/A is more expensive than having more than 199 seats.

I am sure that both airlines are keen on being the top of the game. I guess "we" are the main benefittors... competition is good in that aspect!

Look forward to more good news from Jetblue!

Carfield,

Song offers 33" pitch while B6 offers 34" pitch in row 1 (because it's bulkhead), and 11 and 12 (emergency exits) and 13-26. Rows 2-10 are still the 32" pitch. In that case, Song does offer an inch more legroom than the forward 9 rows on JetBlue.

Yes that is correct if they had 201 seats onboard it would mean 5 FA's tho 199 seats mean 4 FA's so roughly 1 FA per 49.75 pax! Now at B6 it is 4 FA's for 156 pax or 1 FA per 39 pax! You do the math who is going to have the better service. Also a side note B6 is not charging you for EVERYTHING, like Song is, so you can sit back and enjoy your flight, all the while the Song FA's are busy collecting money and pushing there food and beverage offerings, all the while blocking the aisles with there carts, where B6 does not have carts to block the aisle.

if they do this PAY PPV, will regularDirecTV be free still?
is there already radio on B6?

From the article:
The heaviest competition is between JetBlue and Delta's Song, which both offer free, live TV and are flying more of the same routes.

Song has free Live TV?

Movies will be free during the six-month test period and pay-per-view thereafter. TV will still be free.

guess I answered my own question above!

Song (Parent: DAL), which plans to have seatback TV systems on its entire fleet by February

thats late 2004 now!

is there a chance that this 6 month test period will occur during this March?

[Edited 2003-12-31 17:19:33]

25 Luv2fly : NWAFA I am well aware of staffing levels required by the FAA.
26 JetBluefan1 : "is there a chance that this 6 month test period will occur during this March?" The complete details will be revealed in January. I would guess it wou
27 Flairport : hope its available in march for free... I want to watch DirecTV, but I'd like to try the new service too
