American Eagle also launched two routes from Raleigh this fall: Orlando and Ft. Lauderdale (which was a re-launch; AEagle flew this route for a while between November 2001 and September 2002). On 31 January 2004, they will launch non-stops to Nassau. American Airlines has a very nice prescense at RDU, even though they no longer operate a hub. This inlcudes 20 non-stops flights to New York City every weekday.
As recent as April 2001 they offered non-stop service to White Plains, New York. They also tried non-stop service to San Juan, but it was not popular (lasted between December 2002 and April 2003). Non-stop service to San Jose, California was announced (with a 2 March 2003 start date), but canceled before launch.

Those are some pretty nice frequencies for an ex-hub. Then you consider that you have to add in another 6 flights to LGA on USAirways and 5 on Delta, plus 3 more to BOS on DL and 5 or so more to DCA on USAirways. I will grant you those are the jets for the most part, but it just goes to show RDU is evolving in to a mini hub and it's a very nice OD airport.

While I understand that regional jets are the current fad, I really dont understand a schedule calling for 12 RJ flights on a route between RDU and LGA - of course, schedule and frequency are very important, wouldn't a route like RDU-LGA be better served by 5 MD80 deparutres per day....I, too, remember AA DC10s flying between RDU and LGA (2 or 3 times per day, plus a 72S or two), but does 12 flights with 40-50 pax aircraft really make sense?

Does AA still operate RDU-STL? Or was that route cut during the time AA trimmed 26 routes from STL? If AA still operates this route, there's another flight for you. I would bet AA also serves RDU from DFW and MIA. This is just a guess though. I'm almost positive AA operates ORD-RDU though, and back.

Dutchjet, I couldn't agree more. LGA-RDU is not the type of route like LGA-BOS or -DCA that requires such frequent service, and I would think most passengers would prefer MD-80s over ERJs. However, my guess is that it might have something to do with the slot situation at LGA. I may be wrong, but I do not think regional aircraft are considered the same as mainline for slot purposes. So, AA may prefer to use its mainline slots for other routes, meaning that those 12 ERJs are the only way to meet the substantial demand on the LGA-RDU route using Eagle.

When being a travel agent used to be fun (early to mid '90's), I can remember putting many passengers on AA flights from DTW to Florida. American always had really good, low airfares to Florida, and passengers did not mind making a plane change at a medium-sized airport like Raleigh/Durham or Nashville. I am not talking about record setting amounts of passengers, but a nice amount. When AA closed their hubs at RDU and BNA, a good option for southbound travel from Detroit ended.

Yes I remember Raleigh Duhram very well. That hub was opened in the late 80's for flights to/from all points on the East Coast. There were still a lot of 727's at that time. I remember the 727-100, I used to fly on it in the early 90's when I was a student in upstate NY near ALB. They used to fly there from ORY (Paris Orly), the aircraft used to be a 767-200ER which was brand new at that time. It used to be a convenient hub. It was unfortunately closed in the mid 90's.
American and its regional affiliate American Eagle still have RDU in their system but not anymore as a hub. They fly there only from their main points like you explain: ORD, DFW, MIA, LGA, BOS just to name a few of their important points in their system. Hard to beleive you see mostly Embraer RJ's there when we think that there used to be mostly 727's there. There are however quite a few MD-80's there.
After American closed the RDU hub in the mid 90's Midway had the hub there but now that they are gone, American is making of it a mini hub. I remember Nashville (BNA) also.
