An Egyptian charter plane with 135 passengers on board is believed to have crashed after disappearing from radar screens.
It is reported to have crashed into the Red Sea.

An unconfirmed report says most of those on board were French.

CAIRO, Egypt  — A charter airliner with 135 people aboard -- most of them French tourists -- crashed shortly after takeoff early Saturday from the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh (search), airport officials in Cairo (search) said. There was no immediate word on the fate of the passengers.

The Boeing 737 (search) jet took off shortly before 5 a.m. (10 p.m. EST) and quickly disappeared from radar about seven miles south of the airport, said airport officials, who spoke on customary condition of anonymity.

The officials said 127 passengers and eight crewmembers were aboard the jet operated by the private Egyptian company Air Flash (search), and most were French tourists.

I'm taking a guess: could be a 737-300 belonging to FLASH AIRLINES of Egypt ? Lots of available pictures on Airliners.net taken at various European airports including Paris. Last photo from Paris June 21, 2003.

A flash charter airliner crashed shortly after take off. Reports say that shortly after take off the aircraft would have passed over the Red Sea where it was no longer shown on radar. Military aircraft are searching for any rubble, 136 passengers (mostly French tourists) and 6 crew. Very sad and is said to have no survivors RIP Crying such a bad way to start the new year and not to mention all the flights canceled because of terror level.....What a bad time for aviation

148 people were aboard before the crash, 7 more than the initial information said. Egyptian Boeing 737 with 135 passengers and a 13-member crew aboard disappeared from the radars minutes after it took off at the Red sea resort of Sharm el Sheik.
*******

13 crew, on a 737 ?, seems mighty excessive...
