QF At AA Terminal At LAX

Good day folks!

I noticed on a few of the LAX pictures, QF has been parking at the AA terminal instead of the Tom Bradley terminal. I also noticed that when I was in LAX the last time.

Does anyone know how long QF has been parking at AA? It makes sense, since they are a Oneworld Alliance partner.

Just curious.

I've noticed that myself the last couple times I was through LAX. You're probably right- because of the OneWorld Alliance. But then, why isn't BA over there? Who knows?  Smile

QF only transits the flight that continues onto ORD and JFK there. All other flights still park at Tom Bradley.

Qantas has been parking some of there flights at the AA terminal for about a year I think. Not all services arrive at the AA terminal. I will try and give you a break down of the flights as far as I can remember.

AA Terminal

Arrivals

QF 107 ex SYD
QF 93 ex MEL
QF 108 ex JFK
QF 11 ex SYD (I Think)

Departures

QF 107 to JFK
QF 108 to SYD
QF 150 to SYD
QF 8 to SYD
QF 12 to SYD

Tom Bradley Terminal

Arrivals

QF 25 ex BNE/AA), New Zealand">AKL
QF 149 ex SYD

Departures

QF 26 to AA), New Zealand">AKL/BNE
QF 94 to MEL

I think there is another service from Auckland, but can't remember the flight number, but I do know this flight would operate in and out of the Tom Bradley Terminal.

There I believe this just about covers the Qantas operations at LAX, if I'm wrong on any of these details I'm sure someone will soon correct me.

I think Qantas plans to park all of its flights at AA's Terminal 4 in the future. With the opening of a new joint Qantas-American Airlines Executive Club/Admirals Club, the finishing touch has been put on the structural accomodations for Qantas in T4.

However, I am not exactly sure whether Qantas will find T4 to be the best of facilities. When I flew from Melbourne to LAX back in August, my flight and a flight from Sydney arrived at exactly the same time. The INS and Customs operations in T4 were swamped, and it took over an hour to wait in line for an INS officer, collect our bags, then wait in line again for the Customs agents. Just imagine what it could be like if for some reason three QF flights arrive simultaneously--I'm not even sure T4 can handle three widebody international arrivals! (can they?)

It would be pretty convenient to connect from AA to QF at LAX if they're in the same terminal...not that Tom Bradley is that far from Terminal 4.

In fact, I'll be flying AA to LAX in July for the AI2004 convention. Has anyone been through AA's terminal at LAX since they remodeled it? Does it look nicer and more user friendly or is it still pretty much the same? I've only seen the ticket counter part of it.

It is so nice to see the Quantas jet at our terminal. Gives us such an international feel at T4.

The new AA terminal is very nice at LAX. I think you will agree. The gate areas are completely modernized with new seating in completely refurbished surroundings. Also we just opened a new state-of-the-art Admirals Club. AA management did do a great job with this as LAX is a very successful focus city for us. Now that all AA flights have been moved here, it can get pretty busy but handles the traffic very well.

Stop at Chili's for lunch and pick up some last minute gifts from See's candies.

One thing that could use some work is the security screening area. It seems to be rather small.

This would be QF 155 in/QF 156 out. Arrives/departs TBIT. Good call on the rest of the QF-LAX schedule!!!

T-4 can accom 3 74s. However, only gates 41 and 43 are configured for FIS.



With a choice between changing one's mind & proving there's no need to do so, most everyone gets busy on the proof.

I was on QF 108 to SYD back on august 1, 2003. That departed from AA terminal in LAX.
And on the way back i was on QF11, SYD-LAX, we arrived at TBIT, but i had a connecting AA flight. As i walked through the AA terminal, i noticed a QF first class lounge within the AA terminal. So yes, i think AA/QF alliance in one world is making Qantas move some of its ops to the AA terminal

The infos are great. Now I have two questions:

1) Would it make sense, and if yes are they planning to do so, that Swiss (LX) will also operate out of T4??

2) Is there maybe any parking position which can handle the B744at T4 ready to take a QF A380??
I know that the T.B. Int Terminal isn´t ready. Might this be a reason for QF to have transferred some of its flights to T4??

It is indeed a nice move to have QF with AA in T4. It should make AA mainline connections coming/going to Australia much easier -- not having to go through initial TSA checkpoints again.

QF has so many lounges at (OK, maybe HAD) TBIT it was ridiculous. I think they had 4? 2 Biz, 1 1st and 1 Qantas CLub? 1st lounge was size of a closet and the biz lounges had trouble accomodating 3 744s worth of passengers.

I did that trip a few months ago (still TBIT for my flight to SYD but another QF was docked at T4) and missed my flight due to a double technical out of DFW. When you mis-connect for the Aussie pushes (10PM-Midnight, or there abouts) you are stuck in LA for 24 hours (having been stuck in LAX with UA/UA and AA/QF my fair share of times over this... now I take the much earlier flight!). Unless, of course, you can catch the noon flight the following day (BEST flight... long day then you get to SYD at night and can go to bed naturally) but QF seems to offer that on again off again. I wish they'd keep it -- it is a nice flight and, like every other QF flight, is packed.

Qantas 747-400ERs (dedicated to nonstop Australia-LAX services) are wonderful!!! So nice inside (like 777) and they seem to climb away faster and reach higher initial cruise altitudes... instead of skimming the surf after take off and bumping around so much if there is moderate weather.

Funny how AA and BA started OneWorld, yet seem to always park as FAR away from eachother as possible. I have been a top-tier frequent flyer with AA, BA and QF... you'd think AA and BA were fierce rivals. Qantas gets along with everyone but using your miles is next to impossible!

I don't have a definite answer to your first question, other than to say that two 744s at T4 currently looks like a very tight fit. As to your second question, I don't see why it wouldn't make sense for LX to move to T4: the flight is timed so that it wouldn't get in the way of any of Qantas' movements in T4, plus SWISS passengers would get to take advantage of the new Admirals Club. While LX's entry into Oneworld is still in the preliminary stages, I think a move to T4 is a possibility in the future.

Funny you say that AA and BA seem like fierce rivals--unfortunately for Oneworld frequently flyers like you and me, the antitrust restrictions against the AA/BA alliance make using both airlines on a European trip very frustrating!
The only U.S. airport I've been to where BA and AA share facilities is SAN, and BA doesn't even fly there anymore!!

I agree with you about the 744ERs--magnificent planes, though a little cramped in coach!

All SYD and JFK QF departures are from T4. Unfortunately the QF flights to AKL and MEL still depart from TBIT. So you're going to have to make a small walk. But hey, I know if I was about to board a 15 hour flight I'd want to stretch my legs  Wink/being sarcastic

You should be OK and be all T4. Unless... does AA also still use the TWA terminal? I think I have landed there for a QF connection one time -- flying an AA 757 from DFW (albeit it was a former TWA ship and an AA flt# with "operated by" the subsidiary... but that was 18 months ago. Have been in and out of T4 ever since (from Dallas).

Just call AA and ask them; they'll know. 800-433-7300 in the US.

I believe AA has completed left Terminal 3 (where TWA was located). That's why you are seeing AS and F9 expanding at LAX.

I do have another question for those that have moved back and forth between TBIT and T4. When in transit (making connections), do you still have to go through security between the two terminals? I thought they built a walkway between T4 and TBIT without going outside of the secured areas.

The two FIS gates where the Qantas 747s park are located on the upper-right hand side of the terminal in your picture--the part with the commuter planes.

Trvlr: I experienced the same thing in August with the MEL and SYD flights arriving at the same time. Immigration and Customs was a nightmare. I was at least lucky enough to have priority tags on my luggage. The situation with all the economy bags from 2 flights being on one carousel looked ridiculous.

T4 can handle a few 744's, they can fit at the couple of gates that can handle the 777's. 744's not an issue

American Airlines Terminal have only 3 gates that can accommodate B747-400. Gate 41, 43, and 47B if gate 43 is being occupied with B747-400 then gate 45 cannot not be used. Sometimes at nights when QF flights need to use the gate and AA flights are still there QF would moved it operation to a remote terminal about a miles off the main airport. Passengers would board a bus and be transfer out to the gate.

American Airlines Terminal Custom facility are small and only have a few staff. If two flights come in at the same time, clearing custom could take up to two hours.

Qantas will not leave Tom Bradley Terminal as we are expecting delivery of AIRBUS A380 in early 2006. These flights will be departing out of Tom Bradley Terminal.

Qantas using AA T4 gates because of the traffic QF gets from AA codeshare. There are many passengers that connect from LAX to SYD than other AUS cities therefore it's easier for passengers to remaind in the same terminal for SYD departures.
