A very happy new year to all!
I will be traveling through HNL this week and have a few questions. I am scheduled to arrive on an American Airlines flight at 2:35 PM, my friend is scheduled to arrive on an ATA flight at 2:46 PM. Are those gates close together so I can go over and meet his flight? I obviously won't want to go through security to get to his gate. Would it be better if we meet somewere else? He is flying AQ to OGG I am flying HA. Is there an easy place to meet at the interisland terminal that might be easier?
Furthermore my friends interisland flight leaves at 7:00 PM. Can he standbye on an earlier interisland flight even if he checks bags? Would/Can they pull his bags even though they are being interlined?
Also if they can't pull his bags or he has to fly the 7:00 PM departure would the baggage claim at OGG be the best place to meet him? I arrive at 4:30 PM into OGG and if he can't get on an earlier flight I would pick up the rental car and meet a friend quickly before driving back to pick him up.

Haven't been to HNL since 2000, but when I was there ATA and American were both flying out of the same concourse. Assuming both flights arrive on time, you should be able to just wait meet him at his gate before you have to go to the inter island terminal. It will only take 5 minutes to walk over to the other terminal (you don't have to go through security again). AQ's flights don't have assigned seating, so get there a little early to get a good seat. Hopefully, you'll get to take off from the reef runway.

Both AA and TZ use the Center Concourse. AA's gates are at the very end (17,18,19), while TZ uses gates (20-23) along with DL. Follow the signs that say Inter-Island. Depending on which airline (AQ or HA) the walk will take longer than 5 minutes.
The state designed the walk from overseas to interisland without going through security. Though there is a Hawaii Dept. Of Agriculture checkpoint to see if you may have brought any contraband plants or cuttings into Hawaii.
The south half of Inter-Island belongs to AQ, and the north half to HA.and separated by a walkway (aka smoking section). Each has its own concessions, though the HA side has more.

There is no agriculture check to go from overseas to interisland, only interisland to overseas.
You can meet almost anywhere on your way to the interisland terminal. As for standing by for an earlier flight, your friend can ask to standby for an earlier flight. There is a small chance that he can get sent without his bags, but given the amount of time between his arrival and scheduled flight, his bags should be on the same flight. If you have to pick him up from OGG, you are pretty much limited to meeting him at the baggage claim unless he wants to hike it to another area.
