MAS 737-400's: Whats The Story?

How many 737-400's did MAS operate? ARe they still in service? What layout did/do they have and what routes were they operated? Malaysia seems too small to warrant a jet on domestic routes!

I know some ex-MAS 734's are now with 9W. Did any MAS 734's now with 9W meet with any incidents (like taxyuing accidents or an engine dropping off on the takeoff roll or some such.

Any Information woul dbe much appreciated.

MAS have 39 737-400s and they are all still in service.

They all have 16FC/128EY layout and are used on domestic as well as international (regional/Southest Asia) flights e.g. Philippines, Indonesia, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar, etc).

All MAS destinations in Peninsular Malaysia and some in East Malaysia can handle the 737-400s, some up to 747s. MAS still flies the F50s and Twin Otters to the other smaller airports in East Malaysia.

No, there hasn't been any engine-dropping incidents with MAS 737-400s.

Malaysia, like many other SE Asian countries, has quite a large population and in the case of Malaysia, it is spread over three specific areas - Malaya, Sabah and Sarawak.

Malaya makes up most of the Malay peninsula and twelve of the Federation's fourteen states, while both Sabah and Sarawak (the other two) share the island of Borneo with Indonesia and Brunei.

Malaysian (MAS) flies to nine destinations on the Malay peninsula and islands, eight on Sabah and fifteen on Sarawak. Many of the domestic routes are plied by 734 (the workhorse for the area) and indeed quite a few by A333 and occasionally 744's.

Examples of routes using 734's are KL to Kuching (1hr45min), Kota Kinabalu (2hr35min), Langkawi (55min), Penang (50min), Kota Bharu (55min) and Johore Bahru (45min) among others. All of these destinations have over half a dozen flights a day with 734's.

As you can see, some are quite lengthy (direct/non-stop) flights with quite a demand for frequncy.

MAS doesn't operate into Laos since 94/95.

I don't think that there are exact plans for replacements yet but there where a lot of speculation on a.net earlier.

Motorhussy: the peninsular is not called Malaya. It is called Peninsular Malaysia or West Malaysia. It hasn't been called Malaya since 1963.

Before MAS sold off its fleet of 737-5H6s - MAS was the largest operator (outside of the USA) of the 737-400/500 series in the 1990s. Some MAS 735s are still in service with Air France.

Another reason to the needs of domestic flights within Peninsular Malaysia is the mountain range that splits the western and eastern coastlines. Apart from that the South China Sea means flying is the only viable option for travel between the Peninsula and Sabah/Sarawak.

When MAS gets its balance sheets back on track - I would see them ordering a much-awaited large order for their 734 replacement. Many options have been speculated but its going to be pretty much a battle between the A321/320/319 family against the 737NGs.

Domestic routes can get very busy in Malaysia during the school holidays and festive seasons - so the humble 737s sometimes give way to their mighty brothers...

MAS sold 2 off to 9W.

Past intentions includes replacing the 737-400s with 63 737NG/A32Xs. Recently MAS was even talking about getting them replaced with the EMB-170/190s or even Dash-8-400s! Hope not.

Latest update was no turboprop! and I definitely hope so. But I do think those props in the remote areas wld be fine or it'd cost quite a bit to even accomodate a RJ into them.

39 is a whoppig number of 737's! When I think MAS i think 747's to the US because half of the people I know who fly out from PNQ to the US seem to go on MAS! I thought they must have had lke half a dozen, but 39!

Anyways, anyone knows the regs(before and after) of the 734's sold to 9w? And wat was the period?

Interesting that MAS also had 735's. 9w also had the for a short time ( i remember my flight to MAA was on one). Did these also come from MAS?

What you saw was probably 9M-MQJ. The rego for MAS 737-400 are 9M-MQx and 9M-MMx. The 737s ops into HKG from Kuching or Kota Kinabalu depending on the season. Now I think they only fly from KK to HKG.

Correct.....most I think were leased from QF (-476). A few were -4Y0s.
Also, MH used to have 2 737-3H6F as well (9M-MZA/MZB)

Yes some of the 735s were ex-MH, VT-JAZ and VT-JAW were ex-MAS 735, which are now with BA.

Indeed, 9M-MMO became VT-JAE and 9M-MMP became VT-JAF.

Sorry for my earlier faux pas in regard to The Peninsular. I was born in Malaysia when we still called it Malaya. Singapore was still waiting to be expelled from the federation.
