Have a 3 hour transit at LAX on the way to SFO next week. In with QF 93 at 7.45 nd out with AA from T4 at 10.45am.
questions:
Are there many long haul 744s arriving between 8 and 1.45 in the morning?
What;s the view like from T4; is there another easy to get to vantage spot at the airport to spot planes? (no car, so have to walk).
Will prob fly on the new 744ER, so i'll look forward to writing my first trip report!

Qantasclub,
From 08:00 to 09:00 it'll be somewhat quiet for the "heavy" arrivals. You'll see a KE arrival during this timeframe. Starting about 09:00, you'll get the initial wave of 74 arrivals from Asia. A couple of JL's, NH, TG, maybe SQ, if the flight is early.
T-4 is a very good vantage point for spotting. It's situated near a set of taxiways that serve as the primary exits for arrivals off the 25s. That being said, you should get some nice shots of UA's heavy from SYD as it arrvies. T-4 is 'next door' to TBIT. You'll have a nice lineup of planes to view from the west-facing side of T-4.
Even with 3 hours between, venturing out might be somewhat risky, in that depending on the day of the week, the lines to go back through security can be time consuming. I'd suggest sticking with T-4, maybe venture over to TBIT and go to the mezzanine level (resturant level) for decent viewing.
Hope this is helpful!!!

The Tom Bradley International Terminal is just west to Terminal 4 so you can get a good closeup on all the widebodies parked there. As Aaway suggested, the mezzinane level in the International Terminal is a perfect area to spot, especially in this one part that faces the AA hangars where you have good views of a/c taxing. My favorite spot in TBIT.
Ladies and Gentlemen it's happy hour. You will get two approaches for the price of one.

At T4, go to the south end of the terminal and you'll have great views of runway 25 departures. By that point, most aircraft are just getting airborne. Tom Bradley International is on one side and Delta's T5 is on the other side. Have fun!
Can someone give me a short describition how to get to this spot.
I've heard that the colorstate is changed from orange to yellow, if I'm not mistaken. Only a few airports like LAX and LAS aren't changed, the security stays the same. Are there any problems reported to take pictures at these airports or are there no problems to do this.
PS: Serge Bailleul and I are coming to LAX Monday 19th and to LAS Wednesday 20th where we will stay for 2 days. It would be nice to meet someone of the local spotters around there.

That picture looks like the person is standing on the Fedex ramp.

I was right. I don't know how close you can get to the ramp though. It is right across from United cargo and maintenance building.

Won't be able to get close to the FedEx ramp. However, in the vicinity of Hangar 1, there's a little parking lot at the end of a roadway. Look for the Delta Airlines cargo buliding (intersection of Imperial Highway and Douglas Street). Follow the portion of Douglas that lies north of Imperial. It will dead end at this lot. Other landmarks...AC cargo, LH cargo, MX cargo, Ontairo Aircraft Service/ASIG.
The lot is directly across from the threshold of 25L, so good shots can be had there.

Brubiac
Regarding the Air Tahiti Nui aircraft. That shot was taken from inside the Tom Bradley Terminal. It is on the Mezzanine level basically the center of the terminal in the back seating area in the food court area. Those are the taxiways between the north and south runway complexes. That plane is headed south towards the 25 side. There is another taxiway closer to the windows for the north bound traffic headed to the rwy 24 side. The bradley building is right next door to T4, very close, adn there's no security to get to the mezzanine level for food or for pics like that air tahiti shot. All the security for TBIT is at the ends where the concourses begin for the gates extending from the main buiding.

If you go to Bradley, you might as well head up to the top of the T3 parking structure. That is the best spotting from in the airport since they closed the deck on the theme building. BTW, NH now flies their 777 into LAX while UA has gone back to 744s to NRT. Pity about NH, as it was nice to see their 744s next to JL's
