Indian Airlines 43 A 320 Breakup Order Revealed

The break up of the 43 aircraft order of the A 320 family by INDIAN AIRLINES has been revealed.

It is :

20 Airbus A 321s + 19 Airbus A 319s + 4 A 320s

*These aircraft will replace the current 12 A 320s that are on lease + a dozen off B 737-200s of Alliance Air and their entire A300B2/B4 fleet.

All the 30 A320s which are owned by IC have 4-wheel bogies. The later ones are all leased and since Airbus did not produce 4-wheel bogies for any other operator, it is but natural that A320s which joined the fleet later would not have 4-wheel bogies. The 4-wheel bogies were ordered bearing in mind that they would have had to operate from underprepared strips which are common in India. However I feel that IC is unlikely to order 4-wheel bogies for any of the new airplanes as the load penalties / technical & maintenance specifications and the associated costs besides the problems of finding buyers for these airplanes at a later stage would outweigh the considerations of operating to semi prepared strips which could probably be served by other airplane types (ATR 42s for instance).

Vimanav: I am told that IC plans to retrofit the single bogey systems even the existing owned A320's. This would apply to the 31 A320's OWNED.

THere was a problem of availability fo specific spares since IC was the ONLY operator of this subtype, and with the progressive upgradation of 120-odd airfields to receive A320 eqpt the modified landing gear is considered unnecessary.

I read/heard somewhere that Alliance Air was contemplating a seperate A319 order to replace their ancient 732s. This is the first time I'm hearing that the IC order would also take care of Alliance's needs.....

Maybe the ET got it wrong........??

Maybe a review should be called for on the order.....

IMO, if IC is gonna continue to fly International, and they will, their choice of acft should be driven by what their competitors fly. If u look at the sectors IC flies most of their competitors fly widebodies on these sectors ie

India-Singapore on SQ : 777s
India-Malaysia on MH : 777s and A330s
India-Gulf on EK/QR/GF/SV : 777s, A330s, 747s and the cccasional 737/A320 (GF and OA)
India-Thailand on TG : A330
India-Srilanka on UL : A330 (ex MAA/DEL)
Bombay-Pakistan on PK : A300

Widebodies would provide not only additional seats but also a similar experience to competition. I would say order a few A330-200s as well......

Also, when u read the article it gives you a good idea of the understanding the guys in the planning commission have of aircraft and what to order to replace what....consider this.....

There are some numerical errors in the appraisal report of the Planning Commission which are now being reconciled, civil aviation ministry sources said. Officials of the Commission were probably not aware of the number of seats lost on account of the A300, A320 and B737. The rough estimate of the replacement need is around 3,560 seats which will need addition of 27 aircraft. The final tally would be approved by the PIB, they added.

Amazing, isn't it....
