After having flown on a Dash 8 again today, I started looking through different Air Canada Jazz / Air Ontario / Air BC Dash 8 photos in the A.net database and I found one that is really odd:

Why the red props? Other photos of this same AC show them black, as well as every other Dash 8 photo I looked at

Anyone have any idea why this was done?

Look closer at the pic..it almost appears to be a primer of some sort, or a covering. definitely not standard!

Could that make it difficult to make a visual inspection of the prop in a walk-around?

In the first photo the aircraft is wearing prop covers. These are used to cover the props to prevent them icing up if the aircraft is going to be sitting idle during freezing conditions.

They are red to ensure that they stand out - they must of course be removed prior to engine start!

While I'd love to agree, the spinners are all red looking too. Perhaps you have better resolution or something, but those DO NOT look very cloth or nylon at this position. If you can prove me wrong, I'd be encouraged...

Prop covers also cover the spinners...

From my point of view the propeller baldes certainly do look like they have covers on them. Look at the blade pointing up and away from you on the port engine - you can clearly see ripples and undulations in the fabric. You can also see ripples on the fabric around the spinner on that engine... The surface of the actual blades/spinners should be much more smooth and aerodynamic than it appears on the photo.

A closer look at a dash 8 prop:
