I was just wondering whether anybody thinks that after GTAA chairman Turpin resigns later this year, the GTAA's fees at YYZ will go down.

I think or at least hope so.

I want your opinions on this matter! I told you the government should still have custody on the airport Angry

Martin,

Governments cannot run successful businesses. Period.
The Government would have built us some half-assed terminal building to "save money".
I am very thankful to Mr. Turpin and the rest of the GTAA for pushing forward and building what will be an absolutely amazing airport that is worthy of our great city.
Unfortunately there isn't an observation terrace in the new terminal, but that's for an other thread  Big grin
I agree that if fees are too high it will stifle growth of YYZ and restrict the ability to attract more airlines. For that reason I hope they do eventually reduce the fees. But as a frequent traveller I am satisfied with the tangible results I will soon enjoy (April 6, 2004) from those very same fees.

Cheers,
Kaz

I think that the government would not do a good job running the airport..if that was the case it would be finished 10 years behind schedule..like everything else the government does.
The GTAA is kinda stuck..they spent all this money to build this new terminal and it cost a lot of $$$$ and they have to get that back somewhere.
Just sucks that the timing is not so good as just as this is happening as the airline industry is in the dumps.
I do think the fees need to come down so YYZ can attract new airlines and new service but the bottom line is that the airlines need to service YYZ so most airlines will stay regardless the fees.
I for one am glad to finally see a new terminal in YYZ..the airport is an embarrassment!

cheers!
Alek

Geez, is your nose brown enough yet?

Turpen left a mess in SFO when he left there and he's gonna leave YYZ a mess when he leaves here. Bisignani was right - Turpen loves to build cathedrals to feed his ego - and SFO's Intl Terminal and YYZ T1New are prime examples of that.

There's no way the fees will go down simply because of Mr. Turpin's departure. He's not the only person the group who set the fee structure.

But the new terminal is beautiful. You finally feel like you're entering a world class airport...which is, of course, the gateway to our world-class city.

This is a tough question. We will only know in 10 years minimum what the right decision was. For now, it seems like over-ambitious expansion without any regards to costs or market feasibility. To have roughly the 30th busiest airport in the world with the 5th highest costs doesn't seem right. But I do agree that the new terminal is very very nice and will give a greater impression on visitors and transfer passengers. But if it doesn't cause an increase in passenger service, but rather creates a decrease in the number of people due to costs out of line with market realities, then obviously this is a bad decisions.

Can't wait to find out!

The difference this time around is that the succession building has already begun within the GTAA, and the people that will be left to run the show are very skilled and well respected in the industry...there are also certain individuals who have joined from outside of the aviation buz and will be bringing a fresh new approach to everything at YYZ...You will see some majore changes at the top levels of the company starting in April or May 2004 and lasting well into 2005.
