The Mysterious London L-1011 Mockup

I have wondered this for years! Maybe this forum can help solve this mystery, or prove that it was a figment of my imagination...

Around 1987-88, I was flying into LHR. It was on approach to 27L, that I was gazing across the city landscape, when a huge object caught my eye. When I focused on it, I saw that it looked like a full-sized L-1011 sitting in the middle of some industrial estate. I was amazed. I wanted to see exactly what it was, so when I picked up my rental car, I drove off into the general direction of where I thought I saw it.

I never found it. I've flown into London many times since and have never seen that L-1011 again.

People I've asked have said that it was probably at Shepperton Studios. However, I think that plane was closer than that. Plus, I've been around the studios and they don't have a backlot big enough for something like full size airplane. I also believe that it wasn't in the same direction as Shepperton.

Does anyone know anything about this mysterious plane? Or do I need to be put in a straightjacket and hauled off for having a wild imagination? I mean come on what's next, seeing the QE2 parked outside a McDonalds in Hammersmith?

I've been a long time lurker and now a first time poster. This mystery is the catalyst for my joining Airliners.net. It's worth the $55 just to possibly get an answer here.

Thanks.

P.S. Does anyone know when NWA will retire their DC-9's?

Could it have been the big green fire trainer at Heathrow? Looks like a DC-10/747 hybrid.

No. It wasn't on airport property. It was off in the near distance.

You said it "looked like a L-1011", are you certain it was a tristar or some other object? Cos i'm baffled, i've never seen a commercial airliner in a non-airport/airfield/museum area. I'm stumped.

So you were sitting on the left hand side of the plane (looking South)? Can you remember how far before touchdown?

What you just saw is a special mockup designed to train firefighters based at LHR. They use that simulate crash situations--including a full interior fire.

There was an L1011 parked at Wisley for a while - not far from Shepperton. Don't think it was there in the 80's though.

Yes, I was on the left side of the aircraft, looking south.

It was not the fire trainer. I believe that is on the west side of the airport too. Again, it was not on airport property.

I was no more than 500-1000 feet off the ground probably. It was that close to landing.

Thanks for the responses.
