Qantas 744s IFE AKL-LAX

A friend at work is taking two of his Grandkids on a trip to LA and the thought of 12 hours without IFE for the kids does not bear thinking about.

Anyone hear know how far Qantas has got re equipping its OJ* fleet of 744s with IFE and what do they use on the AKL LAX run.

All 744's have PTV's. They will have them on this flight for sure.

IFE = In flight entertainment, Qantas has had this since the 707s!

Flew this route in June on VH-OJJ and the PTVs were installed. It is however one long flight in coach with so many other people! Our flight was oversold too, making all 400-something seats filled...not very comfortable.

Don't take too much notice of the website ... it says thay are still being upgraded. All 30 of the 744's have had PTV's for sometime now.

Most likely this summer I'll be flying LAX-SYD. Besides for the 14 hours in air, bBetween meals, IFE, and sleep is it really that bad? I've been on many flights to Europe which have ranged from 6-8 hours, but nothing as bad at DTW-SNN on an ATA 757. So does the 14 hours feel endless or do you get by?

I've flown the LAX-SYD segment and 14 hours is probably an underestimate when you factor in ground time and unusually strong winds. It took us closer to 15 hours, and I can tell you, it's an extremely LONG and uncomfortable ride.

If you're unable to sleep on planes (like me) then it can be unbearable. I just kept watching flight trackers the whole way and got excited whenever we flew near an island. I will fly it again, but not without some sleeping aids.

that's why I like the 1300 or so lunch time QF flight LAX - SYD, now restored.

Have a late lunch on board, watch movies, PTV etc, snak, have dinner and arrive in SYD about 2100, by the time you get home/hotel its time for sleep, no jet lag.

Here here Gemuser ... Im with you ... ever before I became a Flight Attendant I only ever flew QF8 for the exact same reasons as you !!! you have summed it up perfectly allthough in my time as a PAX - there were no PTVS' just the main cabin movie marathons ...

Now that I work on QF8 all the time, im surprised that so many other pax havent caught onto QF8's relaxes day onboard !!

like all previous posts the job is all complete for PTV screens in economy., they are just slowly completing the last few 743's, Two have been completed, two are currently being completed down in Avalaon I suspect, whilst the reamining two have been rested for about 12months of duty. I guess it travel doesn't pick up to certain levels the might visit their new permanent home in Arizona.
