Air Canada reports first traffic rise in year
Last Updated Tue, 13 Jan 2004 18:20:07
MONTREAL - Air Canada has reported its first increase in traffic in 12 months, as its mainline system revenue passenger miles (RPMs) rose 0.2 per cent in December.
Air Canada said its total seats available for sale fell by 2.6 per cent as capacity was cut. That led to a load factor of 72 per cent, up 2 percentage points from the previous December.
"At a system level, December traffic moved into positive territory after 12 months of decline reflecting a strong Pacific and much higher demand for Caribbean, Mexican and South American destinations," Air Canada chief financial officer Rob Peterson said in a release.
For the year as whole, traffic fell 12.2 per cent to 37.9 million RPMs.
Jazz, Air Canada's regional airline subsidiary, flew 2.4 per cent more RPMs in December. Capacity fell 4 per cent, resulting in a load factor of 59.4 per cent. That's up 3.6 percentage points from December 2002.
