Another sterling piece of journalism from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/04015/261617.stm

Though there may be a note of glee in the P-G's reporting (for reasons discussed in earlier threads), I haven't seen these issues raised elsewhere. In many ways, it seems that everything that was part of the post-chapter 11 business plan is now up for grabs.

Cheers,

Logos,

The Post Gazette is well known up here to have an axe to grind against US Airways. They love to jump on ANY news that can be spun as bad, and are also guilty of printing falsehoods whcih they have been forced by US Airways legal department in the past to retract. Just a little love from the hometown paper to the hometown airline. Which is one more reason that I want US AIrways to drop PIT like a drunken whore and move things to PHL, CLT and more point to point flights. And move me out of here as well....I hate the Yinzers here!

Gizmo:

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette beats up US the same way the Atlanta Constitution and the Miami Herald beat up poor Eastern. Some of the articles look like all they did was change the particulars and rerun the articles in the P-G.

I think that MDA is going to firm up just fine here in the next few days or so and be up and running soon. This business is being blown way out of proportion. It's nothing more than a minor skirmish.

The combination of ALG and PIE is something that should have been done years ago.

If you are really fortunate, they will move the ops to CLT. Not only will you eat far fewer Tums, but the weather is a lot nicer.  Big grin

Gizmo,

I already know what you're talking about. The "sterling piece of journalism" was heavily laced with sarcasm. It was more the specific points (potential loss of financing for the E-170s, etc.) that I hadn't seen anywhere else.

In some ways, this is the P-G cutting off its nose to spite its face. I'm sure many of its readers can't be too happy with the potential loss of US and the attendant drop in air service it would represent. It's not particularly helpful for circulation for them to talk down the airline.

Cheers,
Dave in Orlando

Whether the paper has a beef or not, if any of this is true, it means that capacity on the East coast could be dramatically cut in the near term if US goes ch 7. I truly believe that the 70 seat regoinal jet is the future for US. Without it, and I'd say PHL, DCA, and CLT are in big trouble.

Those RJs still have to be certified. I've known about that for sometime. They still have to be sanctified by the FAA.

That six passenger count shouldn't make any difference in the pilot pay rate. Airlines change configuration on airplanes cabins fairly often. As a result, the passenger seat count goes up or down. It doesn't effect the pilot pay rates. This strikes me as a tad silly.

US's 757s have been reconfigured from 24/158 (182 total) to 8/185 (193 total). US mainline pilots are not getting a raise because there are now eleven more passengers on the plane.

I agree, Piedmontgirl. It's when I see this sort of behavior on the part of USAirways' unions that I get the most pessimistic about the airline's future. Not that they haven't been shafted by previous (and possibly present) management teams, but they seem to have no sense of proportion or when to choose their battlegrounds. This contentious labor-management relationship that characterized EA among others on their way down might be the biggest obstacle to US' longevity.

Cheers,
Dave in Orlando

This sort of behavior is common at US in general. There is no proportion to anything. The context is always dropped. It's true that US management, both past as present, is less than stellar. However, behaving foolishly will not do anything to fix inept managment and will only hasten US's demise.

This causes people with common sense to eat tons and tons of Tums.

It shouldn't matter, but when there is this much hostility, every little bit does. I'm aware of the cert process. I'm also aware of the problems with unions. I'm in one and they grieve $50 if they can stick it to the company and get one over them. The palne currently is not in the fleet. Therefore the union basically has all of the leverage right now. I truly feel sorry for the Allegheny with the possibility of being liquidated. You know where you stand when you're given the choice of merging or going broke.

I feel for them, too. That's a tough row to hoe, no matter how you cut it.

The hostility at US is thick enough to cut with a knife. I am convinced there is not one happy human being working there. However, business is business and everyone needs to get on with doing it if there is to be even the slimest chance of saving US from decades of its own past foolishness.

The reason why the Atlanta papers beat up on Eastern was because the one of the owners of the newspapers (the Journal and Constitution are owned by the same company, and the two papers merged a few years ago) was on the Board of Directors at Delta.

Thanks for that piece of information. I knew that the ATL papers beat up Eastern unmercifully, but I did not know why. That makes sense.

I believe that the early management at US has ruined the airline and now the union will shut it down. I really hate it when I see what unions do to good companies. I still don't know if I should hate them or just live with them but when they start to fight with a company that is already as hurt as US is its just a bad thing. US is hopeless and just needs to shut down already so someone else can start over. I hate to see any airline go but no one is working to make US a better airline or even a "workable" airline. Sad....
