Does anyone know why a 5:58pm flight from JFK to MAN would return to JFK at 11:23PM in an emergency situation last night?
Hydraulic problem is the reported cause.
I would have thought this flight would have been well over the Atlantic and JFK NOT the airport available in am emergency.
The flight is normally just over 6 hours?
Can someone shed some light?
I did a search but got no hits.

The aircraft was a 767-300, G-BNWH - the aircraft which almost always operates the MAN-JFK route.

Only info I found is this:

-----
The Associated Press

January 16, 2004, 1:28 AM EST

A British Airways flight on its way from New York City to Manchester returned to Kennedy Airport after experiencing hydraulics problems, authorities said.

British Airways Flight 1502 landed safely shortly before 11 p.m. Thursday, according to Tiffany Townsend, a spokeswoman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which manages the region's airports.

Townsend said about 129 passengers were aboard the plane. No one was injured, she said.

Messages left for British Airways were not immediately returned.

I'm sure some more info will surface pretty soon - strange that it returned to JFK so long into the flight - maybe they wanted to minimise passenger disruption.

Ah, G-TECH behaving itself again  Insane
Maybe David_itl knows this, but how many problems did G-BNWH have last year?

A 767-300 with only 129 passengers? That's very discouraging for BA. Are all their loads between JFK & MAN this light?

If it had been a true emergency, the crew would have surely set down at the closest airport. Sometimes a crew will elect to return to the point of departure for the convenience of the psgrs and availability of MM. I'm only speculating but I think that may be the scenario here...

Thank you everyone that posted a response!
I just thought maybe the press got their facts wrong again.
A return 4 hours into the flight?
OK.. Well the mystery remains.
The MAN direct from JFK is once daily, maybe. I'm sure the load factor fluctuates.
Looked fairly light last night.
