ELO's "Calling America":
"Told her that there was a place like heaven
Across the water on a 747
Yeah, we're living in
In a modern world.
And pretty soon she's really got the notion
Of flying out across the big blue ocean
Yeah, we're living in
In a modern world.
Talk is cheap on satellite
But all I get is (static!)
Information, I'm still here
Re-dial on automatic.
CHORUS:
Calling America (can't get a message through)
Calling America (that's what she said to do)
Calling America (that's where she has to be)
Calling America (she left a number for me)
Calling America.
But I'm just talking to a satellite
Twenty thousand miles up in the sky each night
Yeah, we're living in
In a modern world."

Credence Clearwater Revival had a song called "Traveling Band" were it talks about a 737 "coming out of the night" or something along those lines. It's been a while since I heard song, haven't played that LP (yes, I said LP) in a while. I may spin it tonight when I get home.
Then there's Peter, Paul & Mary "Leaving On A Jet Plane". Steve Miller Band had one about a "big 'ol jet aeroliner". Never liked either group.

Steve Miller Band (Jet Airliner)
Leavin’ home, out on the road
I’ve been down before
Ridin’ along in this big ol’ jet plane
I’ve been thinkin’ about my home
But my love light seems so far away
And I feel like it’s all been done
Somebody’s tryin’ to make me stay
You know I’ve got to be movin’ on
Oh, oh big ol’ jet airliner
Don’t carry me too far away
Oh, oh big ol’ jet airliner
Cause it’s here that I’ve got to stay
Goodbye to all my friends at home
Goodbye to people I’ve trusted
I’ve got to go out and make my way
I might get rich you know I might get busted
But my heart keeps calling me backwards
As I get on the 707
Ridin’ high I got tears in my eyes
You know you got to go through hell
Before you get to heaven
Big ol’ jet airliner
Don’t carry me too far away
Oh, oh big ol’ jet airliner
Cause it’s here that I’ve got to stay
Touchin’ down in new england town
Feel the heat comin’ down
I’ve got to keep on keepin’ on
You know the big wheel keeps on spinnin’ around
And I’m goin’ with some hesitation
You know that I can surely see
That I don’t want to get caught up in any of that
Funky shit goin’ down in the city
Big ol’ jet airliner
Don’t carry me too far away
Oh, oh big ol’ jet airliner
Cause it’s here that I’ve got to stay
Oh, oh big ol’ jet airliner
Don’t carry me too far away
Oh, oh big ol’ jet airliner
Cause it’s here that I’ve got to stay
Yeah, yeah yeah, yeah
Big ol’ jet airliner
Don’t carry me too far away
Oh, oh big ol’ jet airliner
Cause it’s here that I’ve got to stay
Oh, oh big ol’ jet airliner
Carry me to my home
Oh, oh big ol’ jet airliner
Cause it’s there that I belong

Cool thread However, that Albert Hammond song represented some of the worst music from a decade (at least in my opinion that generally sucked; disco, You Light Up My Life, The Osmond Brothers). In the early 60's between Elvis and the Beetles there was a time when songs featuring teenage death were all the rage. The Everly Brothers had a 3 hankie tear jerker called: "Ebony Eyes" 1961
"
On a weekend pass I wouldn't have had time
To get home and marry that baby of mine
So I went to the chaplain and he authorized
Me to send for my ebony eyes
My ebony eyes was coming to me
From out of the skies on Flight 1203
In an hour or two I would whisper I do
To my beautiful ebony eyes
SPOKEN
The plane was way overdue so I went inside to the airlines desk and I said Sir, I
wonder why 1203 is so late? He said Aww, they probably took off late or they
may have run into some turbulent weather and had to alter their course. I went
back outside and I waited at the gate and I watched the beacon light from the
control tower as it whipped through the dark ebony skies as if it were searching for
And then came the announcement over the loudspeaker
Would those having relatives or friends on flight number 1203 please report to the
chapel across the street at once.
Then I felt a burning break deep inside
And I knew the heavenly ebony skies
Had taken my life's most wonderful prize
My beautiful ebony eyes"

Since DFW is my favorite airport, this Jimmie Dale Gilmore tune is my favorite airliner song:
Did you ever see Dallas from a DC-9 at night?
Well Dallas is a jewel, yeah Dallas is a beautiful sight
And Dallas is a jungle, but Dallas gives a beautiful light
Did you ever see Dallas from a DC-9 at night?
Well Dallas is a woman who will walk on you when you're down
When you are up, she's the kind you want to take around
But Dallas ain't a woman to help you get your feet on the ground
BAnd Dallas is a woman who will walk on you when you're down
Well I came into Dallas with the bright lights on my mind
Well I came into Dallas with a dollar and a dime
Well Dallas is a rich man with a death wish in his eyes
A steel and concrete soul and a warm hearted love disguise
A rich man who tends to believe in his own lies
Yeah Dallas is a rich man with a death wish in his eyes
Well I came in to Dallas with the bright lights on my mind
Well I came in to Dallas with a dollar and a dime
Did you ever see Dallas from a DC-9 at night?
Well Dallas is a jewel, yeah Dallas is a beautiful sight
And Dallas is a jungle, but Dallas gives a beautiful light
Did you ever see Dallas from a DC-9 at night?
Awesome, awesome song. How many of you out there have seen Dallas from a DC-9 at night? I have only once -- and that was because I got re-routed. I was supposed to be flying Northwest/Continental DTW-IAH-ABI, but I was delayed in DTW, so they re-routed me on American Eagle DTW-DFW-ABI. The DTW-DFW leg was on a NW DC-9, and I took up that window seat solely so I could see the lights of Dallas from this DC-9. As we approached, I tried to keep the words to myself, but I just couldn't help it. Probably annoyed the person next to me.
Some of you may recall that 10,000 Maniacs did a cover of this song in their MTV Unplugged performance. It's not on the CD, but you can see it on the performance's video (or DVD, if it's out).
And the inspiration is dead on -- Dallas is a jewel, and Dallas gives a beautiful light.
