I am trying to decide which airport to visit MIA, DTW, or MEM. I will be taking a trip to CLT next month, and I am trying to decide which airport haven't I been to recently. AA connects from MCO-MIA-CLT, while NWA, MCO-DTW-CLT, NWA also has service from MEM-CLT, how is MEM and can you see the huge processing plant for FEDEX, as you approach or depart the airport?

Skip MEM, it's a pit compared to DTW. Not sure if AA's projects are done at MIA, but you'll be able to see the new NW terminal in DTW, and see the beginnings of the expansion to both the B and C concourses there as well.

I'd go through DTW. DTW's McNamara NWA terminal is fantastic, believe me, you will be amazed. It blows away MEM im quite sure of that, and MIA wont come close. Im not sure how MIA or MEM's terminals are, last time i was leaving through the McNamara terminal, you can EASILY get awesome views of aircraft taxiing around the ramp, 747s, A330s, etc., ( The Whole side walls of all of the terminal are mostly glass, only thing that sucks is that they have these black tiny dots on the windows so you cant take pictures ) Im assuming you will be flying a DC9 DTW-CLT if you take that route, if you do, i believe you'll get those nice 717 interior's on those planes

depends at what time. MIA has the advantage of alot of international service from the caribean south and central america. Plus all the majors from europe and your AA hub. I have never been thru DTW so I cannot comment but I don't belive it gets the international service that MIA does. Just my two cents.

I'd agree with UA865 - Miami has some South American planes that are really worth seeing. DTW from what I've heard is alright and the terminal is beautiful but once MIA gets done with construction it should be a decent place to visit and get around in (compared to know). If you're into spotting MIA has some awesome sights off the runways too.

Not that I am biased based on my location... but I'd say hit MIA. As mentioned above, lots of flag carriers and planes you won't see at DTW. Example... you could see an Iberia 346 or a Finnair M11. Not too bad for one day's spotting.

DTW is a superior airport to MIA... I've maintained for the longest time that as bad as the old DTW terminal was (and what's left of it -- not occupied by NW, though -- is), MIA's much worse - probably the biggest dump in the country. I think it's difficult to spot from the terminal of pretty much any airport in the country, so I have no opinions on that. But the windows in DTW do allow awesome views of NW's aircraft (744 especially!).

I have to totally disagree. Most of MIA (except A and H) is a huge mess and a complete dump, but nothing can top the old Detroit Metro. What remains of the old section is even worse since Northwest moved to the new gateway. They are really letting that place rot. The new Northwest terminal rocks, though, it is amazing.

I am biased as well, but from a photographer's/spotter's standpoint MIA surely beats DTW. Much more diversity here than the the one-airlined DTW. However, if you are simply interested in the terminals, go to DTW. Until the North Terminal project is complete, MIA will still be a dump.
