In addition to MCI, STL and MSP Frontier may add more cities by fall/2004. Any comments about expanding service from LAX?

Cool! I wish them the best of luck on expanding out of the LA area, but I really do think that this expansion is too spontaneous. These 12 cities should be added over a couple of years, not months.

I'm surprised that it would be as many as twelve cities by Fall.

CEO Potter has said they plan to expand at LAX "slowly", and adding another nine cities in a few months isn't "slow".

I'd guess that MSY would be on the list, and maybe DFW. And it's possible they'll introduce some Jet Express routes from LAX.

There's also a school of thought that says they will add LAX/HNL.

A few months ago, the CEO said that HNL is "a long way from the top of the list", but he said that before they announced the expansion at LAX.

So the theory goes - and it isn't mine - that it's low on the list for DEN, but possibly right up there for LAX.

What terminal in LAX does Frontier operate from? And is there really room for such agressive expansion?

It would be nice if they hit OMA from there. They are head to head against UA on the OMA-DEN route and DEN is a good place for us to get through to LAX. If F9 goes direct OMA-LAX, they will take a chunk o' change away from UA.

How many planes do F9 have on order? Are the A318s the ones TWA ordered, or were they not built yet?

Thanks,

Aa757first:

There are still about 6 A319's and 1 A318 from the "old" order. The "new" order is a bit complex.

Seperately, there are another 2 A318's to be leased plus one A319.

"New" order:

There are 15 new order A319's to be purchased. However, the purchase price requires F9 to lease 3 x A319 or A320 from a third party leasing company. F9 also has the right to convert any or allof the 15 A319's to A320's.

F9 has also said they intend to lease an additional 16 x A319 or A318.

The A318's are not the ones TWA ordered. F9 became the launch customer, and got the first ever A318.

This is wrong. F9 plans to slowly expand LAX. Below is a message from the F9 employee website.

Rumor: By September, we’ll serve 12 cities out of LAX. (Yes, the rumors are getting that specific.)

Reality: As Jeff said at the initial announcement, the forecast for LAX has not been completely defined yet, since the initial service to three cities – MSP, STL, and MCI – hasn’t even begun. Jeff said that we’ll start the service and, based on its success, consider expanding. We’re sorry to be so vague, especially considering the specific nature of the rumor, but we’ll let you know as soon as plans are made.

They operate out of T-3. There are plenty of empty gates in that terminal. When AA moved all their flights over to T-4, this opened up around 5-7 gates.

Like UAL747DEN mentioned, that is a rumor only. It would probably be dependable on the way that the first 3 cities goes. Also F9 needs to receive more planes to continue expanding, I could only imagine that by Oct, maybe another 3 could be added up.

Well first of all I'm already doubting Boston due to the fact taht they've already had one unsuccessful go around from their hub at DEN. My question is wouldn't they wait to see how the first three routes perform before you go dumping planes into something that may not even be any good? LHR, sometimes I'm baffled by your posts. Big thumbs up

Unless Frontier has a death wish I can not see them starting flights from LAX to ABQ, LAS, PHX or SMF due to Southwest and their presents in those markets. I could see some of the other cities, but only time will tell how the LA fights will work out for Frontier.

What Air Brasil stated is true.... It may not even happen.... However, many people within F9 and at the Los Angeles operation of F9 are talking about big plans for the airline at LAX.

It is not set in stone that F9 will add anymore flights... Take a look at my post again and notice that I included the word "rumor".. I included that word because it is not fact and at this point it is mere here say!

LambertMan,

Sorry, just repeating what has been discussed at F9 and at LAX.... To badSt. Louis will be loosing more and more service over the next few years. As usual Los Angeles is being a hot topic for growth for a great many airlines!

Right...anyways I'll assume thats a good deal of sarcasm. We'll see if STL continues to lose flights, as of late AA has been pretty happy it seems with its performance and has actually been adding RJ flights back, which with its feed could lead to more mainline  Wow!. If AA continues to do better and better, look for more and more growth from the step-child hub I like to call my hometown. One thing to possibly look for is a second SAN flight judging by the incredible loads each day on that flight. Big thumbs up

I am not sure I have ever seen truer words posted on the internet.

Inaugurating service to those cities would be like (take your pick)

(a) Sleeping in a den of hungry rattlesnakes
(b) Sticking a fork in the light socket while barefoot and standing in a bucket of salt water
(c) Taking a TV into the bathtub with you
(d) Trying to cure the flu with seconal and Jack Daniels

If Frontier tried something that dumb....and I doubt they will.....the VERY next thing you would see in the Rocky Mountain News or Denver Post would be Southwest advertising $29 tickets from Denver to Salt Lake City......with a walk up fare of $59. Same thing to Phoenix. Maybe a little more to Chicago. It would be ugly.

Kelleher allegedly said Southwest would be back in Denver when cows flew. Frontier tries this.....then they really need to start worrying about holstein strikes rather than bird strikes while on short final.

FYI, Frontier no longer even flies from Denver to Boston.

Again, the CEO has said - and it has been repeated here - that any expansion will be very slow.

And, as desirable as LAX may be, it does have certain limitations for F9.

As Timberwolf correctly said, Southwest has a lock on many of the "near" destinations. Add in HP and Alaska, as well as the big boys, and nouth/south west coast is not thick with opportunity.

Mexico is pretty much out. Under the bi-lateral, only two airlines from each country can serve any Mexico/US city pair, and most of those city pairs are already allotted.

There are some exceptions to this in Mexico, and a couple of attractive destinations, but all the big ones have gone.

Canada? When/if F9 starts serving Canada, it will be from DEN. LAX would be a long, long way down the track.

New York? Frontier's NY airport is LGA, and under present rules, no airline can fly LAX/LFA except on a Saturday, when the perimeter rules are relaxed.

This means that either they'd have to change the perimeter rules at LGA, or F9 would have to open up at another NY airport.

I'd guess that HNL will come eventually, but again, the CEO has said that HNL is "a long way from the top of the list."

And LAX/HNL is not exactly lacking in air service.

All that said, there are some opportunities - and good ones - for Frontier at LAX.

It just takes a little imagination.

cheers

And maybe it will be the other way around... WN's nightmare may begin shortly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Personally, F9 has good fares, I've seen them. I'd much rather fly an airline with a 5 dollar direct TV charge, and reasonably good meal service without a bunch of annoying hooligan F/As!!!!!!!!!!!

25 DLKAPA : Where's the Widebody love? come on, convert some of those 319's over to 330s. A330 is one of the only a/c that doesn't serve DEN. Yet. DLKAPA
26 UAL747DEN : We are happy without that ugly usless 330! I would take the 767 over the 330 anyday!
27 DLKAPA : UA has enough 767's that serve DEN. Bring on the A330! DLKAPA
28 Post contains images Mariner : UAL747DEN: "We are happy without that ugly, useless 330!" I think that's the first time I've disagreed with anything you've posted. cheers mariner
29 UAL747DEN : LHR001 You are so worthless! You say that there is a lot of talk within F9 about expanding LAX?? Did you see my post! That is from the employee websit
