Delta - Int'l In MCO?

I recently learned through another thread that Delta once operated MCO-LAX-NRT with MD-11's back in the early 90's.

Back in the day when they had a much bigger presence in MCO, did they ever have any non-stop international service to Europe??

Only FRA, after the PA acquisition. It was an early casualty as they started closing the FRA hub...

At one time, DL had considered using MCO as their gateway into Central and South America. I remember how mad Maynard Jackson (then mayor of Atlanta) was at the thought of MCO getting the service instead of ATL. But then Leadership7.5 came along, and DL retrenched the hubs. They put off expanding into Latin AMerica for a few years, but appear to have done well at it so far....

Delta operated MCO-ORY starting in 1993 for about two-years witht he L1011-500. I think that it operated three-days per week.

I also believe they had an MD-11 service in the summer months to LGW however I think it was quite short lived. I think it may have been 1995 +/- year.

The LGW flight was actually routed via DTW as it was the one of the routes UA did not buy when they bought PA's route authority to LHR! The flight actually was routed MCO - DTW - LGW - FRA, FRA was a change of planes to a 727 out of LGW. DL later sold this route to NW who of course has the hub in DTW. Also once NW had the route authority from DTW to LGW they then moved there BOS flight to operate from DTW and offer twice daily service.

Delta's MCO-LGW flight was routed as a direct (no-plane-change, no-disembarkation) service thru MIA. I know, because I flew this service more than once in 1993.

If you were flying MCO-MIA, it was a domestic flight. HOWEVER, if you flew from LGW to MCO (via MIA), you did NOT get off in MIA. The plane carried on with Int'l pax to MCO, where they went thru Customs / Immigration again.

I flew on this service about five times (as a UM) between 1992 and 1994. Fun times.

Did domestic pax from MIA-MCO go through immigration too; that would seem absured... Then how would they know the difference between the people who got on in MIA and those who got on in LGW???

N863DA is correct, the MCO-LGW transitted MIA on the way over.

The DTW-LGW service came over in the PA aquisition. The routing was actually CLE-DTW-LGW. You could deplane in DTW as a thru pax on the way to LGW, but you cleared customs in either DTW or CLE on the way back. It was operated briefly with an L1011, but the majority of the time it was an A310.

What was Leadership 7.5 you ask? It was then-chairman Ron Allen's plan to get costs down to the same as Southwest (7.5 cents per ASM). Unfortunately, the problem with 7.5 is that the goal was more important than how you got there. It had a real demoralizing effect on DL people, and was the end of the true "Delta Family".

No domestic pax were allowed on the flight flying MIA-MCO that was the continuation of the LGW-MIA-MCO service. It just continued with thru pax from London.
