Well, I haven't gone since a bunch of us were chased away and Wagz was "detained" by the police. That was under an Orange alert however, things may be different under yellow.

I know Wagz has gone since that day, sometime they bother him sometimes not. Hopefully he will see this post and give you some better info on the security concerns.

AS for spotting the best place is on Hog Island Rd. by the Sun Oil dock. Follw signs to Ft. Mifflin.

Would there really be much variety to see in Philly? Although to be honest I have never been there, I get the impression that you would most likely see a ton of US planes, a few other narrowbodies from AA, CO, DL, UA, etc., and maybe an international flight or two (BA comes to mind). It doesn't sound terribly interesting.

If you're really interested in spotting, you might want to drive up to EWR - you will see a TON of CO and a few aircraft from the other US domestic airlines. However, if you go in the early afternoon, you will see a multitude of international airlines that serve EWR. Some that come to mind are:

Air France
Air Jamaica (although their flights are usually leave in the early morning and return at night)
Alitalia
British Airways
CSA Czech Airlines
El Al
Ethopian
EVA Airways (although they only come later in the evening)
KLM
LOT Polish
Lufthansa/PrivatAir
Malaysia
Mexicana
SAS
Singapore (I'm not positive but you might see their A345 from SIN)
Swiss
TAP Air Portugal
Virgin Atlantic

Quite an interesting mix if you want to see many international airlines but don't want to take the haul all the way to JFK.

Hey,

It was my dad was that was "detained" as UAL put it. Granted the president was coming two days later and the Marine One chopper was already in town. However, the best the Police Sergeant could come up with was a traffic violation for "Disobeying an officer".

Anyway, I haven't been down there spotting on public roads in a long while. Probably not since last summer. I have been "inside the fence" a few times with a friend at the Airport Fire Station so there's obvisouly no hassles there. However, the PHL Spotters Yahoo group founder is a regular on Hog Island Road and he reports that as you long as you park on the side of the road opposite the fence, the police generally won't bother you. Last summer we were there for about 4 hours before one cop made us leave, but we had the tailgate to our truck open and our scanners / cameras were in clear sight. He did leave two other cars not 50 feet away alone. I would suggest remaining in your car most of the time to not draw any unwanted attention.

Also, things you can look forward to are about half a dozen US A333s, some US 762s, BA 744, AF A332, LH A332 or A343, and a whole crap load of US A32Xs and RJs. Throw in a few AA S80s, DL 80s and 752s and a bunch of NW Deisel 9s for good measure.

Hey UAL, Brian (DeltaMD11) wants to organize another spotting meeting in March again, hopefully with better results this time. Let me know if you want to join us. We haven't decided on a date or anything yet.

I think Big Foot is blurry, Its not the photographers fault. Theres a large out of focus monster roaming the countryside

I was at PHL in January, and I was told by an army employee from the base next to Fort Mifflin that if you stand or park between the railroad track and Island Avenue, you're okay. Two police cars drove by me during this time as well, and they didn't stop, but I'm almost certain they noticed me. About 10 yards from where I was standing, there was a body dumping one week prior! So watch out down there! The view of the planes makes up for it though.

Whoa! A body, eh? I didn't know things were so rough down there. The worst I've seen was a prison chain gang walking down the road picking up litter while we were spotting once. That made things rather intresting.

Not to mention those ATV riders that keep crashing and killing themselves. My dad almost got taken out by one of them doing about 70 MPH down the wrong side of the road. Maybe the cops should worry about them, they're wreckless.

Hi fellas...

I'll be back in PHL from something like March 19th to March 23rd (cant remember the exact dates) for my spring break and I'd definitely be up for giving Hog Island another go since it appears everything is allright following that awful police brutality (for lack of a better term) of last year...

I'll always be around but my spotting is generally done know from the heated comfort of terminal D. Best view in the whole area, and you can completely unobstructed from on end of the airport to the other.

Let me know I may have a day off to head over there.

The person arrested--were the charges dropped? Did he have to go to court? Fine? Jail? Community service?  Confused

727,
Since I was present for that whole situation, they just took Joe in and the only thing that they could do was give him a ticket for not obeying and officer. So much for their "state of emergency" ploy. If you want to read exactly what happened, use the a.net forum search and under the archived threads for civ av search for the War on Spotters - Arrest, or something along those lines form March of 2003. I was looking at it a few days ago--the thread makes a good read.

Joe, Greg, and Brian---while your attention is on this thread, if Greg is in town I was thinking maybe March 21st then for a little get-together? Let me know.

That seems unusual--a mere ticket after being arrested and hauled downtown. What was the fine? Apperance in court?

Yeah, I remember that thread.

I normally work gates and yes up there we have to meet inbounds. But I'm on Vacation that week so I'll probably be visiting my brother at Ft. Irwin Ca. Out in the high desert.

Hey everyone,

Ok, my dad wasn't quite hauled to the infamous "downtown" per say, but they took him over to the Airport Police station between Terminals C and D and kept him there for an hour or so. Since all they gave him was a ticket for "disobeying an officer" it just goes to show how ridiculous some of these cops are, in that they really can't nail you for doing anything wrong. It was actually a "Traffic Violation" for $95. Our lawyer said we could have theoretically faught it since its no crime to park on the side of a road when no "no parking" signs are posted, but it would have been too much trouble.

March 21 sounds good to me. Either of the days on that weekend will work for me (or any other weekend for that matter). Let's just hope Dubya doesn't decide to come by again, and that the weather turns out better. Maybe by then I'll have my PPL, although I'm not counting on it. We could always try contacting the fuzz ahead of time and make ourselves known. Brian, send me an IM or something so we can plan this out.

I stayed at the Marriott hotel - top floor with a panoramic view of the airfield. Great for spotting but not for photography.
