SFO-BOS America West Will Fly 2 757's

I noticed that 01MAR04 to 03APR04 HP will launch the SFO-BOS w/ A319 but as of 04APR04 it will be 2 757's. Now I remember a post that they were going to operate 1 flight on the westbound leg only with a 757 due to range limits on the A319. Since now both flights are 757's both way, does this mean that the load outlook is promising? Anyone here from HP that can give me some inside info? Thanks..Im looking forward to non-reving on this flight this summer.

I am not quite sure about HP with the aircraft change from A319 to B757 aircraft and those load factors is very high to SFO. It is still limited range from BOS to SFO. It would be good for the extra more passengers goes to SFO.

Hmmm, I didn't see the 757 on the eastbound flights, only on the BOS-SFO. I read a memo that they are adding some 757's into new markets, maybe they will change both the flights.

You shouldn't have any problems non-reving on the flights. They are filling up nicely but not completely full. The LAX runs are busier, though they have also been around a bit longer too. I work for HP here is PHX, as of Jan 31 the load factor for the transcon flights is a whopping 39% for the first few months of service. Yesterday the fullest flight was BOS to LAX booked 54 of 124..Not very good numbers at all, most days the flights are booked under 30..

They did start off pretty slow, and the load factors varied when I checked. Some days they were half full, some more than half, some only about 30 or so. Around the holidays, they were very full (like everything else!). The SFO runs were very low...only booked to about 10-20, but again they are new routes and will take a bit of time to get established.

There are no range limits on the A319 in terms of BOS-SFO. It is easily within the A319s range. Air Canada flies A319s on YVR-BOS/MIA/IAD/JFK with zero problems.

Are you really working for America West in PHX? Also, I am live in PHX, too and when we were came in Arizona from last 3 months ago of November 15, 2003. This is came from FLL for more than 24 years. Now, I am still miss in FLL very often. It would be good to living in PHX with them.

Those load factors are not very good with the transcontinental flight from BOS-SFO & LAX. It would need to get fill it up with their customers. It is not too full flight either.

You are correct in your point MAH4546, but remember the 319 comes in various MTOW, with ranges of about 1800nm to 3700nm. I'm not at work so I can't tell which versions we have, my guess is with the amount of shorthaul flights we have, they purchased planes with lower gross weights. The SJO service was suffering pretty substantial weight restrictions and were not able to come back to PHX full. The BOS-SFO flights are even longer than that.

Well, HP is just starting this route.

I flew a couple transcon myself last week and it was not too full on AA's LGB-JFK and JFK-SJC. It was fairly typical for this time of the year -- pretty slow. Therefore, there are usually many deals out now.

I actually think HP does a good job in forcing AA and UA to reduce the price a bit and hopefully the load will get better after Spring Break, and when the weather in the east becomes reasonable.

Give it sometimes.

The hijacked transcon flights on 9/11 had similar pax loads. Sounds pretty typical.

During 2001 HP used A319s to ANC and those flights were always fully loaded with psgrs, bags and cargo and they had little or no restrictions.

You also need to consider that the flight left PHX at 1930 during the summer while the temperature was still in the 90s.

I flew BOS-LGB last week, our flight time was 5h 34m on our A320 (jetBlue). Before leaving, I was speaking with the America West crew in the hotel lobby, they mentioned their flight time was going to be 6h 10m BOS-LAS in an A319. I later asked my Capt how could HP take longer to fly a shorter distance in a lighter aircraft - he metioned something about the engines be 'de-rated' and less powerful than ours although we both equip our a/c with the same engine types (IAE V2500)... maybe this has something to do with it??

Every airline blocks different times for their flights. It's not uncommon for one airline to allow say an extra 10 minutes or so for a particular flight, compared to another carrier. The engine type has nothing to do with the flying time, the plane itself has the same cruising speed. I understood that HP got planes with higher rated engines to cope with the heat in PHX and LAS, though I don't know the details. Another possibility is the cruising altitude and winds. Possibly B6 chose a different altitude with lower head winds or different routing. Westbound flights are prone to strong headwinds.

Just an addition I just checked. The scheduled flying time for B6's BOS-LGB run is 6h40m and HP BOS-LAS is 6H10m. Also HP BOS-LAX is 6h25m, comparable to other carriers. Looks like B6 found a way to make up some good time!
