Just read on Pprune that this summer MYT will not have an a/c based at Teesside, and that LBA will become a summer only base, using Canadian A320s.
If this helps them to survive then I guess this has to be done.

This will mean that next winter we will have NO charter aircraft based at LBA.  Crying

Sad news, the variety of planes at LBA in the winter is poor enough as it is.

Slightly off topic but does anybody know the route of the proposed new access road to LBA? Did hear some rumours a couple of weeks back but they seemed too ridiculous to be true.

Does LBA still have that road that runs right in front of the apron, or has that been closed? I think it was slightly downhill from the apron.
Long time since I went to LBA...Ah those BY A320s  Big grin

Yes the road you're talking about is still there, it's quite a good short cut so I use it quite a bit. LBA is quite fortunate in the number of places where you can overlook it from; that's one thing in its favour..............struggling for many more!

GKirk,

Yes, the current access road into LBA runs in front of the apron and gives an excellent view of aircraft using the facilities, though the increased size of the terminal has slightly reduced the number of aircraft which can be seen.

Ant72LBA,
Sorry, I've not heard the plans for the new access road yet, though no doubt knowing LBA it will be something ridiculous and will get turned down. Access to LBA is awful when compared to other similar UK airports. No rail link, no dual carriageway/motorway link nearby and an irratic bus service over the year.

Capital146,
The rumour I heard does indeed fall into the ridiculous and bound to get turned down category. Allegedly a road is to be built from the M1 at Colton round the north side of Leeds to, firstly, the A61 Harrogate Road and then possibly upto the airport. Can see all the inhabitants of Adel, Moortown, etc being delighted at that! If this is anything other than a pipe-dream (or a traffic planners doodling gone out of control) then it would be ten years or more off. If it was upto me I'd just build a motorway through Bradford, couldn't be any worse than most of the existing city centre! Seriously though I do think the lack of decent access to LBA could hamper its future development.

No plans for road access yet, but some proposals are likely as part of the study currently underway into the effects of de-trunking the Outer-Ring Road.

BY will have a based unit at LBA over winter 04/05.

Oh well, EZY, LS and WW will make a mint now with that decision with AGP, ALC PMI and FAO (hopefully with EZY) being charter destinations. Gkirk, did BY lease a few A320's? There was talk a few years ago of them bringing back the 737's, my favorite as it was the first aircraft I flew on and it was with BY?

Yeah, a few years ago (1998?) BY leased 3(?) A320s from TransAer.
For some reason, the 738s had problems operating from LBA to destinations such as TFS,LCA and DLM, so the 320s were brought in, and since then, LBA has seen 757s and last year had a 767 for 2 months.

The A320s pre-dated the B737-800. Britannia leased the TransAer A320s for both the summer 1998 and 1999 seasons.

The first B737-800 wasn't delivered until 2000, and the initial pair were based at LBA and GLA for the summer of 2000. The LBA based aircraft was again the B737-800 in 2001. The aircraft was reported to suffer performance problems at Leeds/Bradford, but these claims were never really substantiated.

Britannia based a 757 at LBA again starting in summer 2002, as the B737-800 were transferred to the Britannia Nordic fleet, in excange for their B757s, thereby standardising both carriers' narrowbody fleets on a single type each.

Was I right in saying that it was 3 A320s?

How come they are still looking to recruit Teesside based crew online, even interviewing a friend of mine just last week. MYT must be very fickle.
