AC//YYZ-SAN Will It Materialize?

Air Canada is slated to reinstate Toronto to SanDiego effective June 1st. Following the cancellation of the route post 9/11, the start-up date has been amended several times.

The computer is currently listing flights between 01June & 30October. It hardly seems worthwhile reinstating a route for 4 months, and S.D. not exactly a seasonal destination such as Palm Springs. Loads were actually decent prior to 9/11.

Do you think it will fly??

If AC has a surplus 319 for the summer based out of YYZ, this might simply be the best route to reinstate profit wise. With UA handling at SAN, it can't be that expensive to reinstate.

Panam, TWA, Ansett, Eastern.......AC next? Might be good for Canada.

Of all of the post 9/11 route cancellations, YYZ-SAN was the biggest shocker for us. Loads were generally perceived to be very good, with alot of O&D traffic.

With the arrival of the CRJ700's and the ERJ's, I've heard that YVR-SAN is high on the launch list.

Before long, hopefully SAN will be invaded by both coasts of the Great White North!!

FLYACYYZ,

Any info as to why they cancelled ONT. As far as I can remember, it got cancelled before Sept 11. ONT could serve as an altenative to both LAX and PSP.

I recently connected through LAX to get to ONT (final destination was PSP). Thought the ONT location was quite convenient.

Any chanc AC would also consider ONT from YVR

It's seasonal, has an 80% LF and is handled by UAL underwing and overwing. It costs them nothing to provide this service.

YEGBEY01 -

Regarding YYZ-ONT, as I took the flight once to get to PSP, I have to believe this destination was severely under promoted. While PSP is very popular with Western Canadians, still a steady flow of travellers from the east as well.

The loads were not great, but great mid-sized facility to fly into, and a quick 45 minute drive to PSP. After the return of SAN, would love to see ONT reinstated.

I don't think the company would fly ONT-PSP, but I think YVR-PSP is a seasonal definite, especially with the recent announcement ths WestJet would be inagurating service.

what surprized me about the SAN schedule was that it was YYZ SAN arr 930pm the overnight in SAN then SAN-YYZ 8am dep 5pm arr.....so it was effectively an entire 319 dedicated to SAN. they should have redeyed it back from SAN arriving at YYZ 7am and fly in daytime from YYZ.

Twofold reasons for the flight schedule of AC543/544.

1) To maximize connectivity to/from Europe

2) Gate and staffing availability at SAN by UA staff. The crew had a 34 hour layover at SAN to avoid legality problems with a minimum 10 hr layover. United firm about not delaying the return flight in the event the inbound flight was delayed, and legal crew rest would have to be extended.

FLYCAYYZ's info makes a lot of sense. AC has a prime departure slot of SAN, and UA's terminal gets very crowded in the morning with both US and AS there, too.

I hope AC comes back soon! Given the (presumed) great loads on the route, I fail to see why it should be delayed any longer.

I can also see YVR-SAN becoming a reality soon, if not on AC, then AS.

As of today....AC543/AC544 has been vaporized from the summer schedule. Hope this is just under scheduling review, as my tequila supply is dwindling, and a day trip to Tijuana is long overdue.

Miss those SAN layovers!

SAN is one of those destinations that is easily supported with multiple frequency by hubs south of the border...

I wonder about this one.

Something is up with HNL as well. For the last week, as of July 1st, all YVR-HNL flights have an inhibit sale on all classes for an indefinite period of time.

Has anybody heard any rumblings about AC's HNL operations??

That was the plan, and AC027 was slated for a restart in November/03.

The old stories. Aircraft availability, low yield, dumping ground flight for Aeroplan points. We heard every excuse. Apparently a fair bit of YYZ - Australia traffic has been lost to other carriers as a result of the direct flight suspension. Customers do not want to have to route YYZ-YVR-HNL-SYD, when they can just as easily do a one-stopper via alternate west coast gateways.

It is rumored to be coming back, but as you would put it, so is a hub in Myanmar!!

Interesting! I can understand the Aeroplan dumping, low yields although I would have assumed only a tiny proportion of YYZ-HNL was bound for SYD...sounds like youre saying there was a high connect rate.

yeah...the YYZYVRHNLSYD routing is a bitch for Eastern Canadians..

with Hawaiian adding new HNLSYD flights and QF adding extra flights..i wonder how AC will fare..if AC was serious about OZ they would do nonstops from YVR a few times a week with A340 or B744.

as for YYZSAN I hope it comes back..it was a great flight, full (overbooked) everytime i took it. The sked was great.

cheers!
Alek

To answer SAN-YVR operated by AC i dont think it will happen in the near future. When Canadian operated it i heard that it had poor loads. So i guess these days either pax fly UA to SFO or LAX then connect onto AC flights.
