Okay, not sure exactly how to describe this one topic wise, but hopefully someone can answer this for me. Prior to 9-11, a few times I had visited with family members who were flying international with a connection in MIA at the gate. If i remember correctly, I was required some type of "gate visit" pass. Anyway, my sister is flying from Boston to Aruba on American Airlines tomorrow with a connection and change of planes in MIA. Is there any way that I would be allowed to get to the gate of her connecting flight in MIA to visit with her before she departs? I believe the time between connections is about an hour, so asking her to exit the gate area to an "unsecure" area won't work... plus I'm not sure what kind of problems that would cause her seeing as she's continuing on internationally.
Thanks for any advice from those who are familiar with this situation and MIA.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the you are not going to get onto the concourse to see your sister. Security is just too tight at MIA. Especially during the day when the concourses are loaded with pax making connections.
Gate passes do exist but they are VERY hard to obtain. Example, two parents bring their minor to the airport for an unaccompanied flight. Only ONE parent can get onto the concourse, not two. Without a ticket for travel that day you will not be permitted past security checkpoint. You can always ask for a pass, but don't get your hopes up.

I think they'll kind of look at me oddly if I walked up to the counter, and asked... "excuse me, what flights do you have today leaving between the hours of 11AM and 1PM that are departing out of Concourse E?" Then when they tell me (if the don't arrest me first)... I ask to buy the ticket with no baggage... proceed to the gate and then return an hour later to the counter and ask for a refund...
Why can I picture myself sitting in some tiny little room being interrogated for hours!? LOL

just be sure to ask for a full refundable ticket, don't be like George (Seinfeld)! and make sure it's an electronic ticket, not paper ticket else..... more work. go ahead, bring your backpack, just so you don't look weird.
