I have worked at a travel agency and I was wondering for those A.net members that work with the airlines what types of Reservation systems do the airlines use. I have worked on Amadeus but i do not know much about it. I would really appreciate any information.

For some strange reason, AMADEUS prices full fare tickets very differently from most other CRS'. For international tickets, it has a tendency to price about 10-20% MORE than SABRE. And we're not talking about the taxes here.
AMADEUS calculates very differently from most other CRS' the point of turn around even though the itineraries on these two comparing CRS' are identical.

All the airlines hosted in ALPHA3 (owned by AF), LHRES (owned by LH), RESIBER (owned by IB), RTZ (operated by 1A for BA), QUBE (operated by 1A for QF), IRIS (owned by RG), FINRES (owned by AY), ROYAL (owned by TG) and SAS HOSTING (owned by SK) used Amadeus as the Reservations system (the inventory is hosted by the separate System User inventory systems). 7 airlines hosted in SITA GABRIEL have the same arrangement.

SITA Gabriel and SABRE have the most hosted airlines, but most of them are pretty small. SABRE, ATRAXIS and SHARES are all operated by EDS on behalf of the various hosted airlines, there are now relatively few airlines out there with their own inhouse reservations systems.

There are some errors...

Deltamatic is Worldspan
Chalks now uses Radixx
SAS Hosting is a deritative of Amadeus
PACER is also Gallileo
Apollo is also Gallileo
Spirit uses TAZER
and so on...

It is a good list but a little simplified and at least 1 year out of date on accuracy.

One you missed:

WN SOUTHWEST AIRLINES SAAS

SAAS is a derivative of SABRE but has much less functionality (namely seat maps) and is somewhat customized for Southwest. I think (though I am not certain) that through the Morris Air purchase, they bootstrapped Ticketless Travel into SAAS externally and only represent E-Tickets as 7T/ET. All E-Tickets are held, viewed, validated and accounted for within a system called Ticketless Repository.

Activale - would beg to differ with you on a few of your corrections...

Deltamatic is Worldspan

I don't think it is - it is RUN by Worldspan, but it is a dedicated host, and not the normal Worldspan hosting system.

SAS Hosting is a deritative of Amadeus

No it isn't - that I know for sure. SAS is hosted in RESAID (which they own but have recently outsourced), which is a Unisys USAS Reservations/Inventory/DCS etc system, and nothing whatsoever to do with Amadeus. SAS is an Amadeus System User which means that their booking offices use Amadeus to book and ticket passengers, with the highest possible level of connectivity to the RESAID inventory system.

PACER is also Gallileo

Hmmmm - don't think so - I think its an old TPF system, but I don't know on which it is based - possibly the original Piedmont PACER (but I doubt it). Galileo is not an Airline Inventory system, it never has been.

Apollo is also Gallileo

Kind of - they are both run by Galileo International, but Apollo is a seperate host (they have a lot of common software and network but seperate PNR databases). United are hosted in a partition of Apollo, quite how it is seperate from the GDS bit of Apollo I'm not sure, but it is (legally, it has to be).

Spirit uses TAZER

Thanks - I will add that to our db.

At WestJet we use OpenSkies and FlightSpeed. However our flights are available on Gallileo as well, and also several other CRSs if I remember correctly.

I still remembered when EA staff was sent to Europe in order to create Amadeus. EA owned System One which was a great system and System One created Amadeus for the original Amadeus owners....Later Continental STOLE System One from EA and eventually sold it to EDS and Amadeus thus it became System One Amadeus...eventually Amadeus bought the last shares owned by CO and EDS and dropped the System One name....

I have used...

System One (travel agent, EA, System One Help Desk)
Amadeus (help desk and trainer for Amadeus)
Sabre (travel agent)
Worldspan (travel agent)
Shares/Sonic (CO, HP)

I worked at the System One Help desk and later at Amadeus after the merger. I can honestly say that Amadeus is far superioir to other systems if used correctly. As a former Amadeus trainer I can tell you that most people do not take training seriously and blame the different systems for "wrong responses" when they themselves cannot understand what formats or entries they used!

Pacer is no longer used to my knowledge, It was replaced at USAirways by SABRE before 2000 because it was not up to par with the date changes and things that happened when 2000 came in. It was also way past its time in terms of convienence, Thank god USAirways canned it i prefer SABRE so much more

****

Thank god for PNR histories! So even if the users dont remember their entries and go into ovedrive on BLAME mode, we can prompt them to remember!

And having worked with Sabre as well earlier, Amadeus I can confidently say is a far more user friendly system!

After all "AN" for availabilty and "SS" for Seat Sell is far more logical than "1" and "0" !!!!.
I guess though with GUIs now dominating anyway these things dont matter!

Like ASBOIRR mentioned, Image/Sabre is used at AS. What that is basically is Image 'reads' from Sabre (Image on top with Sabre in the background) which makes it alot easier to use. Image is windows a windows based program which is very simple to use and that makes life easier to check in pax, sell tix, etc. Using Sabre is like data entry. You had to put in soo many codes to actually do one command. It sucked! I LOVED using Image soo much I never had to learn how to use Sabre and refused to learn how to use it with the exceptions of cashing out my drawer at the end of the day and ATAC out.

What planet are you from?!?

IMAGE sucks. Sabre is SO much better than IMAGE could ever hope to be!

In fact...just so you know...AS has plans to get rid of IMAGE entirely. We created it in-house to save money instead of buying Sabre's "QIKRes" product.

Years (and many millions of dollars wasted) later, AAG has realized just how shortsighted this idea was.

I've always told the execs that their decision to build and use IMAGE was just like how my dad did home improvement:

He'd see something that needed to be fixed, say to himself, "I can save SO much money if I just do it myself!" and then ROYALLY screw it up.

He'd then have to pay THREE TIMES what he originally thought - to have someone come in and undo what he jacked up, and then do the job correctly.

Pretty much all the higher-ups at AS have agreed with me on this one. LOL  Big grin

EA CO AS~

1) Im actually ON earth.

2) I found using Image very useful when I was with AS back in 1999 and it was very simple and easy to use rather than doing the duties through Sabre like the trainers showed us in ICSA class. The only bad thing about Image is that they shut down completely once each week for some reason and the upgrades are endless, once every 2 weeks something is added or revised.

You may think Image isnt a very good product in your opinion and I respect that. But I just happened to actually enjoy using it when I was with AS and the majority of my friends who were also working there also liked Image too. But maybe now times have changed and people hate it. Theres a 5 year gap between 1999 to now, so Image is probably isnt what I once knew it was.

Also there was no reason to get upset in your post about Image/Sabre. Still I respect your opinion and likes/dislikes. Big thumbs up

EA CO AS - you (and I) came from an era where part of the job was understanding and mastering the res system. It required learning and then remembering all the esoteric commands (exchange ticket with add collect on a different CC anyone?). However once we had it under our belt, we could fly through just about any transaction, and fly we did.

IMAGE, and the front ends like it, were built to 'eliminate the need for agents to memorize excessive commands, allowing them to focus on customer service' (marketing words - not mine!). Instead, what it did was eliminate any understanding of what was happening in the background, so if, after an agent filled in a blank, they didn't get the response they expected, they had no idea what to do next. I realize that there are agents out there that do understand what the system does, but they are the minority.

After being involved in development and training of such front end systems at both the agency and airline level, I can pretty much guarantee you, no matter what system AAG goes with, you will always have this problem. The only difference will be instead of having an in house department to yell at when no one can get the bloody thing to work, you'll be yelling at folks in Ft. Worth.

Bring back native (insert CRS) now!  Big grin

More Radixx users:

Air Iceland
Chalks Ocean Airways
Yellow Air Taxi
Hooters Air
Pace/Vacation Express
Trans Meridien
LyddAir
Allegro
SkyEurope
SkyTrans (Australia)
Swiss Skies

Radixx is wonderful because it runs on TCP/IP, meaning any PC with access to the internet via Citrix ICA client can access the Res System. It is all point & click and takes us hours to train someone, versus 3 weeks on standard text-based systems... to be honest, this is the FIRST airline that i've taught Agent Training Classes and didn't give a city-codes test!

here are some screen shots from our radixx

Basic availability.. drop down menu or you can type in the city code... just click your mouse next to the flight you want and the # of seats and click on to the right arrow at the very top (right side)...

which brings you to this screen:

And its all point & click.. and if you goof something up, just click & change it!

to check someone in for a flight, just double click in the far left column...

Oh, almost ALL Radixx users are 100% paperless or almost 100% paperless operators... so no need for complicated & lengthy ticket exchange processes :P

ACVitale is more keen on Radixx New Air v2.1.. the above screen shots are the final Wings version, which is still used by a number of us small fries. Shuttle America part 1 had it, Southeast Airlines, Air Tahoe, etc used Wings while Radixx Air was more complex for larger carriers... New Air v2.1 is supposed to compete with systems like OpenSkies.

Duane-

You're right...and AirframeAS, relax friend..I was just making a point. I respect your opinion as well.  Big grin

The main reason IMAGE is a failure is that it needs to be updated every time Sabre modifies their entries. For example, where there used to be a change key, an entry might change to have a cross of lorraine instead.

Consequently, IMAGE programmers have to call Sabre to find out what's changed, deconstruct the code for the IMAGE side, rewrite it, and then re-release it throughout AAG.

QIKRes, had we bought it, automatically updates when Sabre changes things.

Most of the people who were so behind IMAGE from the outset have admitted it has been a failure - the company would have been better off having newhires go through normal Sabre training rather than relying on IMAGE.

But that'll all change when we dump it. From what I'm told, we're looking at a modified version of QIKRes from Sabre that will save time and money over IMAGE.

Best regards,

RB
