Having just moved back to the States from London, I have a few questions about LCY. It seems to me that LCY is an "overlooked" airport; when I traveled with friends and colleagues from London, we rarely (if ever) considered it.

First of all, it seems like only smaller aircraft can serve LCY. Is this due to a runway or noise restriction? I also have heard that the runway was extended in the 1990s. What service was possible prior to this extension?

Second, are there any plans to expand the airport even further? This seems doubtful, given its location. Transportation is also limited to taxis, if I am not mistaken. Will we see any changes in the future? Or are business travelers content to have limited service at LCY? Thanks for the info.

The largest aircraft that can serve LCY is the BAe146/Avro RJ, because of the short runway and steep approach.

The current transport links are buses to Canning Town station for the London Underground Jubilee Line, and also Liverpool Street for mainline rail and the city. The Docklands Light Railway is currently being extended to LCY, so frequent train services to Bank in the middle of the city will be available in a couple of years.

The runway is 1319m x 30m. The airport is open for operations from 0630-2200 M-F, 0630-1230 Saturday, 1230-2200 on Sunday, and 0900-1230 on Bank Holidays.
