Volare On The Route Venice-Shanghai

Volare Airlines should inaugurate at the beginning of June a direct flight from Venice/Marco Polo to Shanghai. The flight should be operated 3 times per week with an A330.

What other long-hauls does Venice have? Is Delta still coming in with a 767?

No, it will be a scheduled flight. It is not introduced for the Chinese tourists who don't have yet the possibility to spend an holiday in Europe, but it's because of the high demand of the north east Italian enterpreneurs who have business in China. Lufthansa has for example the 50% of its passengers to China who come from Italy. It's a good decision of Volare Airlines.

THis is for starflyer: yes, delta is still coming with a 763-ER for his daily flight VCE-JFK (delta 155 outbound, delta 154 inbound)

Delta is doing very well on its flight VCE-JFK and there are some rumors about the possibility that soon DL will upgrade the flight to an MD11.
Regarding Volare, with this decision it seams that the Venetian airline thinks to keep and to expand its operations on the long haul and to expand its european low cost network. Very soon Volareweb it will start to serve from Venice/Marco Polo some new destinations as Stockholm, Sofia, Warsaw.

Are you sure ? I flew Frankfurt-Shanghai last summer with Lufthansa, and at least 70% of the people on board where Chinese so I don't think the remaining 30% were Italian passengers.

I don´t know exact figures, but high numbers of Italians are quite possible on Lufthansa´s Munich-Shanghai flights, due to Air Dolomiti´s (LH partner) Munich-focussed network in northern Italy.

I really doubt they will start this flight. In any case now they have only 2 A332 (2 went to Qatar Airways and 2 to Air Madrid). They leased 3 B763 (2 from Islandflug and 1 from Yes Air), but it's likely Volare group will end long haul operation from the end of April, keeping only the low cost division Volareweb, that's doing well as number of pax carried, but the financial situation of the Volare group is not good.

Dont be so quick to discount the wealth of the Veneto region.... The most industrious and wealthiest of Italian regions. If anything the flight will go forward with Volare is not another airline. The fortunes of the residnets and businesses in the Veneto is mind boggling

LHR001, for the 5th year the region of Veneto confirm itself to be the 'locomotive' of Europe with Bavaria and Lombardy. The masterplan of the Marco Polo airport previews for the Venice airport a role as a mini hub with some scheduled intercontinental flights based on the business division.
Airblue, Volare and SAVE found already the agreement, in the next weeks it will be confirmed the flight.

AOMlover, Italy represents for Lufthansa the most important market outside Germany. This is because of the inefficiencies of Alitalia. I flew twice with LH to Beijing and the F/A made the announcements in German, English and Italian.
Now Volare takes the place of Alitalia.. here in Veneto we don't use to lose time as our Roman friends do Smile

Actually this would be rather difficult as Delta at the end of 2003 retired their last two MD-11s from service. Perhaps instead they'll upgrade the route to a 777-200? Of course I don't think they have enough for this at this time...

The Veneto region is going through incredible growth at this time. Verona, which is one of the most modern and profitable airports in Northern Italy has experienced continuing growth for the past years. Verona is home to one of the most lucrative bases for charter traffic in Europe. The airport recieves regular charters to such destinations as:

Bulgaria
Cuba
Egypt
Greece
Isreal
Kenya
Maldives
Mauritius
Mexico
Romania
Russia
Seychelles

Not to mention the wealth that Air Dolomiti has found with their operations at Verona!

Treviso is going through the same growth and expansion.

true. The Verona's Catullo Airport is now under expansion because of the high traffic and the terminal building will be doubled.
Regarding Treviso.. this airport is owned by SAVE, the company that owns the Venice Marco Polo airport and right in this days they started to build the new Treviso air Terminal that will be ready in 2005 and it will have the same design of the Venice Marco Polo. The new terminal building of the Venice/Treviso (as it is known) will be able to receive more than 3 millions of passengers per year, in fact SAVE plans to move (as partially it was already done) many charters and LCC from Marco Polo to Treviso. The distance from the two airports is just 25km but with an extremely high concentration of passengers for business and tourism.
