CO will furlough another 600 ticket/gate agents system wide in the next few months. 190 out of EWR alone. But in EWR they are hiring for ramp and cargo agents.

Just wondering where you got that info? I work in IAH and haven't heard any thing about furloughs? Last I heard they are trying to get all the stations the right complement of staffing. Since some stations are overstaffed and others under. I know they don't want to give out any more COLA's or extend them but again nothing on furloughs.

That's bad news - with summer crowds coming and all. Are the kiosks that effective?

Observation: Checkin lines do seem to be a lot smaller.

I love long German words like 'Freundschaftsbezeigungen'.

That is a touchy subject they are complementing the station that need the help and downsizing the other stations the way it was put to me was we are x amout of heads over and you can take the furlough and you may not get called back or you can move we are over 600 heads when cola comes back and other positions so its going to be a drastic cut unless your single and can up and leave.

Everyone is talking about it at EWR they even have a seniority list posted so you can see if your goin to be furloughed or not. They are offering early leave, if they dont get enough volunteers for the early leave then they will have to furlough.

Response:

So... you would prefer passengers go through longer waits prior to reaching security where they will have to wait as well... Ticket Agents, Gate Agents... They are both part of something called "Customer Service"!

At CO, is ACS not above wing and below wing. At Delta it is two departments, but all part of ACS, so a ticket/gate agent can go underwing then above wing from bid to bid.
Basically what I am getting at is do CO furlough agents not have the option to take those open ramp positions.

It's a big building with patients, but that's not important right now.

CO is looking for any tickets agents who might be intersted in going to cargo or the ramp, since they are short staffed at EWR.

Question for everyone at Continental-

How is Continental Micronesia fairing?
- It has been rumored that they have cut numerous destinations and will be continuing to do so now that the Japan to Guam market has suffered severely over the past few years!

Why is Continental Airlines continuing to decrease meal service?
- It has been widely discussed that Gordo in his inflight presentation video states-"Meals at Meal Times". Is he serious, as of late breakfast is a donut or danish... Lunch and Dinner are either a hot sandwich or a cold sandwich accompanied by chips and a fruit or candy... Now perhaps it is just me... Arent those sort of items considered - Snacks.... The same thing that every other airline offers!

Why is Continental Airlines decreasing the number of Ticket Agents?
- True, Continental Airlines has faired well with the self service checkin and the online checkin.... However, why all of a sudden so many furloughs? Why decrease customer service at a time that it is required the most?

Continental Airlines has been rumored to start a new long haul destination?
- Why hasnt this been discussed further? Is the funding still available?

well if this is true, then the installation of all these Kiosks is going as planned by the Tech dept. How to eliminate workers? Continue to develop new ideas for passengers to check-in. Although mgmt. continues to deny the slow process of elimination of ticket agents it is very obvious when you are the one being affected by not receiving that bonus check for having a high ratio of e-ticket machine check-ins. Yes customer service is getting worse. When you have 3 ticket counter agents at the counter and a pax comes up to check in and says I have an e-ticket going domestically, the agent simply says: "okay you must check in over at the e-ticket machine", even though the pax does not want to, the agent refuses to let up and continues to say you must do it over here. Customer service? Hell no, why force our top paying customers to do something they dont want to do?

Continental is adding a new longhaul destination. Daily service to EDI has been announced a while back, starting in June 2004 and there is a rumor that EWR-BHX will go double daily. Measuring an airline's performance by the meals it provides is foolish. Continental offers more than most carriers but frankly, food is lousy on all airlines, except at the front of the cabin. So buy yourself something in the airport and quit complaining about the food.

CO is adding more flights, they are adding a second TLV, a second CDG, a second BHX and a new service to EDI. So I dont get why they need to get rid of so many people, CO says they are overstaffed, magority of the agents working there say they are understaffed.

Even pre-9/11, Continental's 'meals' were the same crappy cold/hot sandwiches and chips. Nothing too fancy. So in a manner of speaking, Gordo was telling the truth. I guess it's better than the nothing you get on other airlines. Though any airplane food is a poor substitute for a stop at Popeye's Fried Chicken at IAH before your flight  Wink/being sarcastic

didn't we just bring back some people in EWR, if you were checking out the EWR website it even stated they were bringing people back due to the additional Carribean flights, the extra Florida flights for the winter and the additional ski destinations, with the summer coming up and more people flying during the summer it doesnt' make much sense that they would be doing this.
Does anyone know why all the opening on the ramp/cargo? Was there a bust that went down?

Doesnt Continental own Chelsea? If so... What is with the meager catering on long haul routes to Brazil and Italy?

I am actually a fan of the catering in BF to Italy, the extra "Italian Temptations" course is very nice with special Italian items not offered anywhere else in the system. The catering to Brazil is due to the late departures on either end, so the BF service is an abbreviated "midnight snack" consisting of an "appetizer salad" course in place of their usual separate offerings. To offset, a larger breakfast is served in the morning.

Easy, they are making money on CO Micronesia.

Why is Continental Airlines continuing to decrease meal service?
- It has been widely discussed that Gordo in his inflight presentation video states-"Meals at Meal Times". Is he serious, as of late breakfast is a donut or danish... If you believe have no snack is a snack. The other carriers might be ya choice.

Why is Continental Airlines decreasing the number of Ticket Agents?
- True, Continental Airlines has faired well with the self service checkin and the online checkin.... However, why all of a sudden so many furloughs? Why decrease customer service at a time that it is required the most?

Easy, more E-ticketing machines and other new ways for passengers to check in.

Continental Airlines has been rumored to start a new long haul destination?
- Why hasnt this been discussed further? Is the funding still available?

These aren't rumors, these are facts. They have been adding long haul sector.
