As they always do have a name for their aircraft (Megatop, Jubilee and now the A345LeaderShip) what do you think SIA will call their 380?

Baroness
MegaShip
Progress

and on and on and on

SIA should run a naming contest....

SIA always has an internal naming contest n many times they combine 2 great names to come up with one of their 'own'

I think only Celestar (for the A340-300) came about as a result of combining 2 names.

Big Top (for the 743s) sounds really stupid on hindsight.
Megatop sounds pretty nice
LeaderShip is really innovative i think. Simple yet great. Grows on you I guess.

The first type to be named at SIA (afaik) was the 747-300 'Big Top', and it was at the time not even meant to become a tradition, the way it has. All the other planes introduced around or before that period were also not named (e.g. A300, 707, 727, 737, 757, DC-10, 747-200). So it's a fairly recent thing.

the cabin crew will probarbly call the A380 "sweat-shop". sure gonna be hell trying to please 500 men, women and children.

for the pax, let's call the A380 " Big Queue". imagine the time u have to wait to board the plane and find your seat 89K. -sheesh-

singaporeans will call it the "luo-han jet" after the very expensive ornamental fish with a big forehead and markings on the side which resemble Chinese calligraphy that to some punters spelt the hopeful winning numbers to the local lottery. (Yes, i thought it was ridiculous too. )

Early models had "3TEN" painted near the nose. However, it never really was meant to brand that particular equipment.

Branding a piece of hardware is silly to me, but it does go down well among the masses who ordinarily wouldn't give a rat's a** what they were flying.

Earlier posters were correct. (1) Naming the 743 the "Big Top" wasn't meant to become a tradition, but it became one after the brand stuck in peoples' minds. (2) Only the 343 and the 345 were named by internal competition, I think, and only the Celestar (ugh!) was a combination of names. I don't recall a competition for the 777; I think it was meant to be a "Jubilee" all along, in honour of its entry-into-service during SIA's 50th anniversary.

A Flight International picture placed the word "Gigatop" on the 380. I don't think that is official or set in stone as yet.
