This is an accurate account of a recent flight a friend of mine had taken on American Airlines. This is his letter to AA

Before taking off on flight 1798 from POP to JFK on Jan.25, 2004 , There was a disturbing anouncement made by a female flight attendant. In substance, The anoucement over the PA system was for all passengers sitting in the coach class cabin not to use the lavatory in the 1st class section because of security reasons. The flight attendant then went on to say that if any passengers from coach class go to use the lavatory in the 1st class cabin that there is a video camera inside the bathroom and that the camera will be turned on and you will be displayed on all the monitors for passengers to see. I understand that this was meant to be a joke but I did not find it very amusing, rather, I was quite offended by it.

Thank You,

Perhaps the joke was a bit too much, but hardly a reason to take offense, AFAIK.

What on earth could your friend have found offensive? The fact that someone dared to deny him the "right" of Coach customers to use the First Class lav?  Insane

I hope your friend develops a sense of humor, and I also hope that AA circular-files this letter.

Based on your profile, I'm thinking maybe you were offended because you're a police officer and think you're entitled to use the first class lav (and shoud get complimentary upgrades), and if it were you instead of your friend on that flight, you would have been pissed??

Sorry to get serious on this pretty funny thread, now i'm not trying to slag you off or anything but I notice from your profile you are a serving police officer, now as the son of a pretty high-ranking police officer in the UK, and someone who has has their application to join the police accepted (when Nottinghamshire Police pull their fingers out and give me a date, people from round here will know what I mean) I know full well how much it takes for a copper to be offended. If this got to you then god help you at work. that wasn't personal, just an observation.

Come on people, have a sense of humor, why do we all have to be so highstrung when we get on a plane...RELAX!!! there is not going to be a camera in the lav....invasion of privacy.......they can't deny you the use of a lav just cause your in coach and the lav is in first.....they just dont want 20 people around it....look at the big picture.....and the cop shouldn't be offended, considering that when they put on the badge in the morning they believe they can harass anyone they want for any purpose....maybe ill use your cop car for a lav next time, or would I have to upgrade!!!!

Since I wasn't there I can't tell exactly what happened nor can evaluate it accurately, but I have to admit the idea of it makes me grin. I like when flight crews are into humour a bit, makes the flight more enjoyable. But as I said, I don't know all the circumstances, maybe it wasn't that funny at all.

And I would find the comment on th PA rather amusing if I was on board.

Grow up people! Every time I turn around there is someone getting offended over something. Its just plane stupid! Have a sense of humor and learn to laugh a little now and then. It will shave years of stress off your life.
I was on an Alaska Airlines flight where the flight attendant gave the most humorous and best safety announcement I had ever heard. She mentioned that, when the oxygen masks drop from the ceiling, please stop screaming and place them over your nose and mouth...." She also mentioned that "smoking was prohibited on the airplane and in the airport facilities and that once you have exited these premises and are calmly sucking on your cancer stick, you might want to consider purchasing life insurance...." These were just a few things she said on the flight and every time she spoke, she was humorous and had everyone's attention. It was great, but I am sure someone got offended in some way, shape or form.

The F/A was only doing what she was told; this is just another dumb directive from DHS. As for the joke, yea, maybe that was a little uncalled for, as we just don't joke about security.

I do not think that the camera or using first class lav's was the issue folks.

The F/A said it was for security reasons...

And I agree. I do not make security jokes to airlines or the TSA and you don't make security jokes to me and we'll have a nice flight...okay?  Acting devilish

I can't believe I'm being THIS serious!
