Norwegian Air, the cut-rate airline that's shaken up the domestic market in Norway, has now cut a deal that gives it a novel new sales network in the country. Passengers will be able to buy tickets at any of the 440 Narvesen kiosks in Norway.
The deal cut between Norwegian Air and the Reitan Group, which controls Narvesen, gives the discount airline an instant and extensive sales force.
Narvesen kiosks already sell such things as stamps and bus, train and concert tickets, in addition to standard items like newspapers, magazines and chocolate bars.
Both parties are keeping details of the deal confidential, but reveal that Narvesen will pocket NOK 50 (about USD 9) on each airline ticket sold. Norwegian now sells more than half of its tickets over the Internet.
"Our philosophy is that everything we do should be simple," Bjoern Kjos, chief executive of Norwegian, told newspaper Dagens Naeringsliv. "And this is a completely unique distribution system."
Narvesen has around 280,000 customers a day nationwide. Ole Robert Reitan of Narvesen said he wants the kiosk chain to offer the most services possible.
He hopes the kiosks one day will also be able to sell hotel rooms and soccer tickets as well.
