Surly flight attendants, but clean, safe a/c and hot meals on all flights, even in coach.

I flied once in Varig. The service was excellent and the aircraft was clean and tidy. Varig is among the best airlines in Southamerica, not to mention it's a member of the Star Alliance.

Have a good trip to Brazil, it's a beautiful country.  Smile

Expect 20 year old MD-11s, narrow seats, 30/31' seat pitch on a 11/12 hour flight, slight delays, unwelcome and indifferent F/As, very average meals.

Varig's MD-11's were delivered in 1991. The first delivery ever of an MD-11 was in December 7, 1990. So, no, they are not 20 years old!

Also, seat pitch in Varig's planes is not 30/31" as stated above, but a generous 33 inches, according to

http://www.airlinequality.com/Product/seats_americas.htm.

Varig's international service is pretty much comparable to those of the major US carriers. But domestically, Varig is far superior in my opinion, especially with regards to meals and beverages.

But yes, their flight attendants do their best to ignore you and treat you with contempt. Varig's fa's are so full of themselves that they see pax as nuisances, not as clients.

Anyway, overall Varig offers a good product. You'll certainly enjoy it.

Oneworldman,

I stand by comments on RG. Bear in mind I'm not an airline employee and my comments are based in my experiences as a passenger only and I've been flying around for the past 30 years . Regardless of what are midia reports and official statements , the last time I've travelled with RG on their MD-11, the space was so tight that when the tray was down I couldn't move at all, their MD-11s were bought second hand before they joined their fleet. All on lease they come from different sources Last additions last year came from LX. Check-in can become a nightmare mainly on domestic.

I agree with Regis when he says service is comparable to US carriers. Brazilians tend to be emotional about RG.

Of course, the choice depends on what you value when you book a flight.

I love Varig. Hope to fly with them again but this time on Business class.

I only flew thier MD11 from GRU-LAX back in late August 03. I think they have good service though no PTV and menus provided!!  Big grin

Let's just blame it on yields.

Marco,

You must have a bad flight, those MD-11's are great, seats are a little small but if you get a bulkhead seat you are fine. The MD-11 in my opinion is a nice ride and actually quieter that a 767. FAs were fine and very nice to me. Their flights do tend to be late a lot though, that was my only thing, I have flown 6 flights with them and all have been late, some over an hour. They change equipment and add flights without telling you till the last minute too. They are the best bet for flying to Brazil though.

Oneworldman,

Where in Brazil are you going? Been there twice, nice country.

i don't like varig very much! to me...they are the worst going to brazil from the US.

the aircraft is dirty and stinky, especially when full. flights are late very often, at least every time i flew on them. not 15 min, but more than 1 hour.

to say the least, i avoid flying varig when going to brazil.

enjoy your trip! brazil is an excellent country! i lived there for 15 years!

Yes they are late, but I find the planes fine, though I would prefer more 777s than MD-11s, but then again some of their deals from JFK-GRU are pretty cheap.

Stinky?? I fly RG lots of times, but I've never been into a stinky a/c of Varig... About delays OK, you're right... About been dirty, everytime I enter a RG a/c I find it clean, only later on, after some hours of flight PEOPLE make it dirty.
Stinky is something I've never seen.

i've just had very unpleasant trips on VARIG...i've flown them only from JFK.

you're not going to see a stinky...you're going to smell a stinky plane.

julio...você é de onde no brasil? eu morei 15 anos em fortaleza. agora moro nos EUA. nao tenho nada demais contra a varig...só que eu acho a TAM, American, e Continental muito melhores!
