An Iranian airliner has crashed on a supermarket near Shajah in the United Arab Emirates.

BBC seems to confirm it was a Kish Airlines plane. They report 35 people on board but Sharjah TV says 60..... They mention some suvivors.

Could just figure this news in German on Yahoo:

http://de.news.yahoo.com/040210/286/3vj6g.html

or in French on Yahoo:

http://fr.news.yahoo.com/040210/85/3mymr.html

Couldn't find it in English though.

Anyone knows anything about Kish Air? What's their safety record? Any other stories about them?

Hi!
According to Aviation Safety Network
During 2002 Kish Air had a heavy landing while operating a domestic flight
No casualities but aircraft was written off after a ferry flight to Moscow
where the nosegear collapsed

Cheers!
Tony

Iranian plane crashes in Emirates
An Iranian plane has crashed near Sharjah airport in the United Arab Emirates with up to 60 people on board.

The Kish Airlines flight had just taken off on a flight to the Iranian Gulf island of Kish. Early reports had said it was about to land.

Preliminary information suggested there were survivors. Rescue helicopters have gone to the scene.

Local TV showed several dead bodies and flames and black smoke pouring from the wreckage of the front of the plane.

The plane crashed in an uninhabited area between Sharjah and the neighbouring emirate of Ajman.

Iran has a history of air accidents, often blamed on badly maintained planes.

Two decades of sanctions by the West against Tehran have left the country with a fleet of mainly ageing aircraft.

Its worst air disaster came in February last year when 302 people including 284 members of the elite Republican Guard died in a military transport plane crash near the Afghan border.

Kish airlines was the first private Iranian airline registered in Iran, and has special status in the country's tourist industry.

Reuters

SHARJAH, United Arab Emirates (Reuters) - An Iranian plane with at least 40 passengers on board has crashed during take-off from Sharjah airport in the United Arab Emirates.

Witnesses said only flaming bits and pieces remained of the Kish Airlines plane. Ambulances were rushing to and from the scene on Tuesday. There was no immediate word on the number of casualties in the incident.

"Only a bit of the tail remained. It doesn't look like many people survived. Rescue teams are still looking for people," one witness said.

"The plane crashed near the tarmac. Police have sealed off the area to allow rescue operations," she added.

The official UAE news agency WAM said the plane was carrying 40 passengers. A UAE officials had earlier said the plane was carrying 60 passengers.

A Kish Airlines official in Iran confirmed that one of the company's planes had been involved in an accident but said the company was still seeking further information.

Earlier, security sources had said the plane was a Russian cargo jet with 35 passengers on board. The type of plane was not clear.

Iran's airlines have difficulty maintaining their ageing fleet of Boeing aircraft, many of them bought before the 1979 Islamic Revolution, due to U.S. sanctions. Instead, they have turned to Russian made-aircraft often leased from former Soviet countries.

I forgot to show the other pictures of Fokker c/n 20273. Seems to be quite camera shy, as only 4 pictures appears on A.net! The first picture was uploaded back on 30 November 1998. Come on guy, search your archives. More pictures of this one must be hidden out there!

Thank you, CNN, for this insight, based on.... what exactly?

Anyone here can confirm that Iran is particularly prone to air accidents? Does the fact of operating TU 154s and Yaks make it more dangerous? It may seem plausible to the non-specialist audience of CNN, but maybe in this forum someone can shed a little more light on that?

Thanks

Instead, they have turned to Russian made-aircraft often leased from former Soviet countries.

What are they trying to say? That Fokker is Russian? That Fokker is a Boeing plane that cannot be maintained because of US sanctions?

This is getting ridiculous. CNN had just reported that it was a "German Fokker". If a reporter is not sure of the facts, then she (in this case) should just leave out the word "German". A Fokker is a Fokker! What did she want to imply anyway? That it is German made or German owned?

Plane crashes in UAE
Tue 10 February, 2004 09:58

SHARJAH, United Arab Emirates (Reuters) - An Iranian Kish Airline plane carrying 40 passengers, including a child, has crashed near Sharjah airport in the Gulf state of the United Arab Emirates.

Witnesses said at least 25 people were killed, but UAE's official news agency WAM said there were survivors and a doctor at a Sharjah hospital said they had received one body and three injured passengers.

The agency said the plane crashed as it was landing from Sharjah at 11.00 a.m. (7 a.m. British time). It fell between Sharjah and the neighbouring emirate of Ajman. Earlier, security sources said the plane had crashed during take off.

In Iran, an official from the semi-private Kish Airline said the plane was a Dutch-made Fokker-50, a twin-engined turboprop plane which can carry 50 passengers and six crew.

Witnesses said only flaming bits and pieces remained of the plane, adding rescue teams were searching the site.

"Only a bit of the tail remained. It doesn't look like many people survived," one witness said.

"The plane crashed near the tarmac. Police have sealed off the area to allow rescue operations," she added.

Kish Airline runs domestic and some short-haul international routes to and from Iran's Kish Island in the Gulf.

Kish Island is a designated free trade zone and Iran is trying to promote it as a tourist destination. The UAE-Kish route is popular with immigrant workers in the UAE who need to renew their residence papers/work permits.

Iranian airlines have been plagued by air crashes in recent years which aviation experts blame on its ageing and out-dated fleet of planes. U.S. sanctions mean Iranian companies have difficulty obtaining spare parts for their aircraft.

A Russian built Ilyushin-76M/MD military transport aircraft crashed in southern Iran last February killing all 276 military personnel aboard.
