Anyone Flown On VT-JBA?

I recently had the "Alliance Air" experience on Jet (as far as the acft goes)

VT - JBA , a 737-400 (inducted recently or maybe re-registered ?) feels like the old CD 737-200s.

I was on a flight BOM-IDR (9W 381). During rotation the acft shuddered and vibrated badly for almost 30s, giving me a real scare. During the landing approach after flaps down, there was more shuddering and since I was seated on 15A I could see the flaps vibrating pretty bad !

The same acft operated the same-day night flight (9W 384). A similar experience on takeoff, lots of shuddering and vibrating. Ditto on the landing approach. When it touched down at BOM it felt like the undercarriage would get detached !!

Anyone has any info on this particular acft ? It's not in the series (Jet's 737-400 are registered VT-JA* and the last I knew, 6 acft were flying ie VT - JAM, JAN, JAR, JAS, JAT, JAU) unless JBA is JAE or JAF re-registered ??

The interiors were OK and service was good but the takeoff and landing were real scary..........just like on Alliance Air or the old IC A300s !!

VT-JBA was re-registered only last month after a sale-leaseback deal with Boeing Capital. She is msn 29035/cn 3046 formerly VT-JAU - a 1998 build 737-45R.

Thanks Sean / Hawk. So JBA is /was JAU. I flew on JAU previously but I don't recall it being so bad. The acft is not too old either (1998 makes her only 6 yrs old) but it really felt like she was struggling to get airborne!

Where did the vibration occur?

-A "green" set of brakes can drive cause noise and loud vibrations until broken in.

-An out of balance main wheel can cause trouble as well.

-The engines rotate at very high frequencies so even if the were adding some vibration to the airframe you wouldn't notice it unless something was seriously wrong. (But you can definitely hear it).

Are you positive you saw the flaps vibrating? They have very little free-play built into them. Trust me if they did move (on their own) they'd inevitably fall off.

Near airports it is possible that the 734 flew through some partial wake turbulence.

Or maybe it was just the weather was the culprit. The air over Delhi is neither clean nor smooth.

Can you be more specific on what exactly was vibrating?

707437,

Thanks for your queries. To clarify :

1. I fly once or twice a week on domestic routes in India, almost always on Jet Airways....737-700s, -800s, the occasional -900 (Delhi) and once in a while, the -400. So I guess I am pretty much aware of how a 737 should or should not behave on takeoff and landing !!

2. Having said the above and having been on several flights, I know it when something is not right !

3. Yup the flaps vibrated for sure. The weather on landing at IDR (Indore, not DEL) was clear at 0730 am. If you recall, I mentioned that the same thing happened with the same aircraft on the same day while landing at Bombay in the night. Maybe the flaps don't have that much play but they vibrated for sure and transmitted the vibration into the aircraft as well.

4. There couldn't have been any wake turbulence since ours was the first flight of the day into IDR.

5. Apart from the vibrating flaps (on landing, when fully extended) the aircraft shuddered and vibrated while taking off, on both BOM IDR and IDR BOM ....not a very good feeling when you're sitting inside it and it seems to really take an effort to get airborne.

Hope this helps and I hope VT-JBA goes thru some maintenance checks soon.

Wow,

That does not sound good a bad flap track can vibrate like crazy. I have a few friends who work in 737 engineering at Boeing who said that a flap may vibrate and not really hurt anything. But eventually the flap mechanism could get to the point where it wouldn't retract properly or worse asymmetrically. Then you're really in trouble.

They said that it sounds like someone at 9W needs to look for some missing screws. And to measure the wear on the flap tracks. . .

But like anything else the skaky flaps might be the either the result or the cause of the vibration problem.

Or perhaps the pilot just used too much flap and the extra drag put a structural load on the plane that caused an odd vibration.

Last time I was in India I flew 14 segments with Jet on ATR, 734, 737 & 738 and had a pretty good ride all the way around.

I hope their mechanics have their act together.

Happy Flying
