Some came out with flying colours. Others were grounded. But both those who'd made it and those who didn't were somewhat baffled by the result.
Air-India's cabin crew recruitment drive kicked off in Delhi on Monday morning. And hundreds of young men and women lined up outside the National Stadium to appear for what was almost certainly the shortest interviews of their lives: it was usually over by the time aspirants introduced themselves.
The fate of a candidate's hopes of a career in the clouds was decided primarily on the nebulous parameter of whether he or she had a "pleasing personality". It took the interview panel about 90 seconds to ascertain this.
"I guess they liked me that's why they selected me", said a beaming Rainretta Hilori of Meerut.
There were certain prerequisites, however. Candidates needed to be presentable graduates (or hotel management graduates) who stood at least 5'2. But the basic nature of the qualifications presented A-I with a problem of scale. 1,800 applicants would have to be interviewed in a single day. Even divided into batches of 300, this left the interviewers very little time for each candidate.
But the brief from A-I is clear. "At this stage we are looking for a particular kind of personality with a definite focus on appearance," Meenakshi Dua, assistant general manager, personnel A-I, told HT.
One candidate said it wasn't just about looks. Manjula Akka said she'd charmed her interviewers with the first two verses of Lagi tumse man ki lagan. But naïve rejects sulked that their "inner beauty" wasn't recognised. Well there's always hope: Miss World 2004 is coming up.

Finally some sense is dawning on AI. If they select professional, hardworking, intelligent and good looking (a wish list) hostesses only on merit, it will be the beginning of a new Air India.
And if we want to make Air India like "India Shining" we also need -
1. A new owner /new investor in the airline (so what if it's SQ and Tatas, they will make Air India great !! )
2. New aircraft (777s and A32Xs)
3. A new livery and a revamp of image
4. More direct flights ex-BOM rather than boring stopovers in CCU DEL HYD MAA on your way abroad !

So all the problems with AI were with the FA's eh? Frankly, i dont mind grannies, as long as they can help me save my own ass when the crap hits the fan! And in that respect, the Jet Airways type bimbettes give me the creeps.
Heck AI can go out and recruit as many bimbettes as they want!! Nothing is going to stop the rut until they begin to solve the REAL problems.
As for "India Shingin", dont let me get started on that one!

Well, the news out of AI is that the Shiv Sena is agitating BIGTIME and insisting that at least 50% of the positions be reserved for those born and raised in Maharashtra state alone. They have set up "coaching classes" for the written test where they will "guide" people through the hiring process for payment of a "modest donation".
It does not bode well for the hiring process, which may just get held up until this is sorted out. Rumor is that the ministry is considering setting up a committee to investigate this which would mean that we go back to square one again and start the hiring process from scratch after the elections.
