I am about to have the oportunity to fly KLM for the first time and on a 744 for the first time. I was wondering if anyone can give a quick review of the World Business service. I will be traveling LAX -AMS. Also, being that this is my first time on a 744, where should I sit? Lower or Upper? Thanks!

Actually, I have a follow-up question: how is WBC on KLM's 767s? I am scheduled to fly EWR-AMS-JRO and DAR-AMS-JFK in C class in September, all on 767s except the last flight (which is a 777). I am aware that WBC on the 767 has a reduced seat pitch and recline as compared to KLM's other widebodies, but is it still reasonably comfortable?

I personally like the upper deck for Boeing 747s... it is an experience... But for KLM's Boeing 747-400, the nose section is pretty comfortable... it feels like first class.
About Boeing 767s, it is a very disappointing product... with the older seats and limited legroom. Not as good as Boeing 747s... I read that KL is not taking care of the WBC seats of Boeing 767s very well.

Flying on a 744 seats 1A, 1B, 1J or 1K are the best seats in the plane. The best seats on KLM planes. Much more legroom, you're feet can't touch the wall, then on the other rows in WBC. Upperdeck is much more cramped, low windows.
Travelled AMS-LAX and LAX-AMS this Christmas in 1A and it was great. Seat are good only the PVT are a bit old fashioned. F/A are very nice, I got an extra Delft's Blue house.

I fly a lot of KLM in WBC between the US and the Middle East. If you really want details, I have written many trip reports on my flights. Here are the three most recent ones. Aircraft range from 763, 744, 743, and M11 for these three trip reports.

Upperdeck has low windows but is as specious as the lower cabin; if you sit by the window you have a lot of 'table' space on your side, great to put your feet/books/laptop while you eat etc.
Of course there are personal video screens.
The seat is ok, not like BA/VS/EK but certainly among the best.
KLM service is great!!
2 trip reports for you, one on the Upper Deck, and the other on the Lower. Contrary to this comment Consider the nose as well. Very, very quiet, I found the Upper Deck to be quieter and you do not have intrusive Economy Class passengers peeking through the curtains at you. Reason is simple, you have the entire deck to you upstairs!
The lower deck tends to absorb much of the noise the nose gear makes when it is extending or retracting so you can feel all the vibrations of the cranking of the mechanisms beneath. And especially when the landing gears bay is opened during landing or take off, woah, the roar is loud and fills the entire nose section.
So I would still prefer the upper deck, if you ask me. You get to be a few feet higher than the rest of the plane! KLM's WBC on both levels is separated by the Economy Class in Zone B of the 744... wierd set up if you ask me!
That being said, the WBC product on KLM is getting terribly primitive. The seats are comfortable and the service is efficient but not warm. Even their upgraded product on the 777s don't seem all that much.
Meanwhile, enjoy your flight and I look forward to reading the trip report!
Welcome to my starry one world alliance, a team in the sky!

Opinions vary, but my personal favorite on the 744 is 4F :
-no seat in front of you.
-no seat behind you.
-plenty of space behind the seat to stow your carry-ons within arm's reach.
-magazine rack right in front of you. It has a small ledge on which you can place trays, glasses etc., thus allowing you to clear your tray table when you feel like it, instead of waiting for the FA to come along.
-you can place carry-ons against the magazine rack without impinging on legroom.
4E has the same advantages, but being right-handed I prefer having the aisle on my right and the videoscreen on my left.
Second choice would be 77A or 77K, upper deck emergency exit row. These seats have handy lockers in the windowsill, which aisle seats 77B and 77J obviously lack.
If the C cabin is not full, I'll take any other seat, provided the adjacent remains unoccupied.
The C cabin in the brand new 777 has received poor reviews.
