Was this the plane that was going from NY-Chicago? My dad just told me that a plane from NY to Chicago was being diverted due to a bomb scare. Haven't heard anything on the news in AZ.

Funny you wrote this. Local Chicago news just reported that an afluent investment broker here in the city has been missing since Sunday (I think) with no clue as to why. He disappeared from the northside of the city, while his car was found on the southside. Tonight they found out that he reported to his wife today (again, I think today) that he had been kidnapped by Al Qaeda and was being forced to go to Morocco. They also said that his credit card was traced to a NYC hardware store where he or someone bought items like glue and tape. They ended the story by saying the FBI demanded the plane return to the United States immediately, which now I guess is being diverted to Maine, and they would update us when they knew additional details.

I'm in Portland, Maine so Im sure I'll hear about it if it did. The local media here has been giving attention to BGR diversions because of problem passengers and air rage incidents. Usually they seem to involve intoixcate British passengers, not Islamic terrorists,
BANGOR - A Moroccan jetliner flying from New York to Morocco was ordered to return to the United States Thursday night and was diverted to Bangor International Airport after receiving a bomb threat from a passenger, U.S. authorities said. The Boeing 767 landed safely at BIA at approximately 11:15 p.m., officials said. It was not known at 1:45 a.m. if an arrest had been made in connection with the incident.
Royal Air Maroc's Flight 201 took off from New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport at 7 p.m. EST and was headed for Casablanca when it received the bomb threat, said Mark Hatfield, a spokesman for the Transportation Safety Administration.
The spokesman would give no details about the threat but said passengers would be interviewed and baggage screened.
Holly Baker, spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration in New England, said, "There was a person aboard who they felt was a security risk." Baker said she knew nothing about a bomb threat.
She said the plane was well on its way to Casablanca when it was diverted to Bangor.
"It's on the ground," she said shortly after midnight. "I don't know what's happening now - whether they'll head back to JFK or go on to Morocco."
Bangor Police, State Police, and FBI personnel responded to the scene. The plane sat on the extreme north end of the runway while authorities secured the remote area.
Laura Brown, a spokeswoman for the FAA, said 82 passengers and 10 crew members were on the plane. Hatfield said 79 passengers were aboard.

This guy was missing on Feb. 14th in Chicago, (he is a investment banker) and later on was seen taking out $5,000.00 out of his account. Then later on this week, he was trying to buy some suspicious items from a family owned hardware store and his credit card was traced to the store in New York. Then either before or during the flight, he called home and said he was kidnapped by Al-Qaeda. That's was when the FAA was notified and the plane landed at BGR. He was taken off and everyone was re-screened and the flight is on the way to Morroco.

The press reports at the time said the guy who started all this was taken off the plane, but was not arrested or otherwise detained. Now today I see he is being charged with making false statements to the FBI, and that all this was related to some tiff with his wife. In as much he invoked the potential of terrorism and mentioned Al Qaeda by name, and as such frightened and inconvenienced hundreds of people on the plane and on the ground, and used up government, airline and airport resources, does anyone else here agree with me that they should throw more at him than "making false statements?" This guy should at the very least be forced to pay everyone back for their troubles, and maybe do some hard jail time as well. The TSA routinely hassles passengers for having knitting needles or making lame jokes about bombs, and this guy looks like he will get off with what is essentially just a charge of lying.....
