As far as I know Air India does not have PTVs in Economy, food is pretty good, but the service is very very basic. Do not expect to be pampered or the red carpet if you are travelling in Economy. Your friend will fly B744s, either Air India's own or the leased ones from Korean Air.
The fact that they are the cheapest has something to say by itself. Although Air India offers a daily service EWR-CDG-BOM, I personally flew Air France, the exact same route paying $200 more.
I'm all in favour of keeping dangerous weapons out of the hands of fools. Let's start with keyboards.

I love AI's inflight service. They played only Bollywood movie. I found VT-EVA a lot better than VT-ESN (sucked). So it would also depend on which aircraft you'll be (a major difference). I liked AI much better than VS/BA, inspite of the fact that they didn't have any PTV's or various drink options. But excellent food and crew and nice interior of the airplane made it up.
