"The first Trent 900 will be flight tested on an A340-300 flying test bed in Toulouse."
That will look interesting. The Trent 500 didn't seem to have much clearance on the A340-300 (or was it a -200?) wing when it was tested. Wonder what the clearance will be with the Trent 900 on the wing?

Yes, the Trent 900 engine is huge. The reason is simple: that 116" (294.64 cm) front fan, the same fan diameter as the front fan on the GE90-115B engine used on the 777-300ER. Rolls-Royce and Engine Alliance built that big a front fan so the front fan can turn at slower speeds, dramatically reducing engine noise.
