Sept. 11 really hurt Midway. Also, it seems to me that they tried to expand too much too quickley in 1999-2000. They just kept adding city after city. I loved that carrier. Great hub at RDU. Very good connections and fares from the northeast to Fla. A bunch of their CRJ's are being mothballed in Ckarksburg WV. Who knows where there 737's are. I was told that at one time they actually had one 747! I think I saw a picture of it somewhere.

Doubtful it will fly again...

on December 11th of last year, Mesa Air was successful in bidding for various Midway assets.. such as:

- operating certificate
- landing and takeoff slots at LGA and DCA
- all of Midways spare CRJ parts and ground equipment
- six leased CRJ's
- Midways rights to 3 leased and 2 owned CRJ's

all this for $9.15 million. I haven't heard whether the deal closed or not yet.. anyone know?

Yes the Mesa deal is done. the Midway CRJ's are going through inspection right now and will be put in the US Express system. The Midway Certificate is also Mesa's but I doubt if it will ever be used again.

Sadly, I can't see why it would ever fly again. One reason is there is no O&D traffic out of RDU. It was a good hub for connecting traffic but even for a hub there needs to be some O&D traffic to supplement connecting traffic. American's hub in RDU suffered the same fate. Now, Southwest is embedded in RDU and no one has any desire to go up against them head to head.

Fly the friendly skys and stay out of mine.

I have to disagree with that. RDU has great O&D for a city/metro its size. It has higher O&D than many hubs/focus cities including: Nashville (SW focus), Indianapolis (ATA), Pittsburgh (US), Charlotte (US), Milwaukee (Midwest), Cincinnati (DL), & Memphis (NW). It also has higher O&D than non-hubs like: Hartford, Austin, San Antonio, Columbus, Providence, Ft. Myers, Albuquerque, Jacksonville, Reno, Norfolk, Buffalo, etc.

That being said, I don't think there's any hope of Midway flying again.

Midway was a class act. Overexpansion killed them. 9/11 was the nail in the coffin. I flew them BOS-RDU-MSY and back in 2000...all flights were totally full...and the service was outstanding.

I wish the original Midway Airlines would come back, same aircraft and with the same color scheme. That would be great.
