I had a feeling this was coming - the political situation was becoming too unstable for flights to safely continue.

Heheh thats funny. Was just watching the news and it reported that air traffic was moving easily out of Port Au Prince and the AA flights went out full today. It is best that they temporarily suspend service though until things cool down a bit. Never know what someone will do if they are on a mission to promote their beliefs.

This should have been done a week ago. The rebels will not stop till Aristide is out. It's going to get real bloody now. I am glad AA has gotten out till the smoke clears.

Scotty---if you happen to read the newspaper or turn on a news station there is a huge rebel uprising in Haiti right now in protest of Aristide.

The major concern is that the rebels are going after Port-Au-Prince proper now. Being as the airport is of a strategic nature, and that airport workers are not going to be able to get in (they're having troubles now), makes this decision academic. That March 2/3 date sounds horribly optimistic.

AA has done this several times before due to political unrest. It is not good financial news for them, since PAP is one of AA's highest money making stations. I can only hope that the people in Hatai can come to a peaceful resolution soon...

Believe it, it's true.

1) Demand is much higher than supply. With over 300,000 Haitians alone in the Miami area, combined with only four year-round non-stops (more during peak periods), fares are through the roof.
2) Average advance purchase fare is over $400. It is less than a two hour flight on a 269 seat aircraft.
3) Cargo yield is out of this world high.
4) Excess baggage charges are the norm.
5) Forget credit card charges. Most people flying to PAP pay with cash.
6) You think American Airlines operates one of thier only CTOs in the middle of Miami's Little Haiti neighbourhood for fun?
7) American Airlines is the only US carrier to Haiti. While Air France and DCA also fly the MIA-PAP route, they don't offer connections in Miami. Also, Air d'Ayiti's service is often unreliable and doesn't have a great rep. Even though they offer cheap fares (thier CTO is actually a few stores away from AA's CTO in Little Haiti, and they advertise thier low fares all over the window), Haitians still perfer to fly AA.

The most profitable markets are always the ones people never think are.

UPDATED FOR RELEASE: Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004
AMERICAN AIRLINES SUSPENDS SERVICE BETWEEN THE U.S. AND PORT-AU-PRINCE UNTIL FRIDAY, MARCH 5

Challenges For Employees Getting To The Airport Led To Decision

AA Working With Customers On Alternate Travel Arrangements

MIAMI -- With many of its employees finding it increasingly difficult to get to work at the Port-au-Prince airport because of disturbances in the area, American Airlines announced today that it is suspending all service to and from Haiti until Friday, March 5.

Despite strife in the country, American has managed to maintain its services between the United States and Haiti until now. The airline operates three nonstop flights daily between Port-au-Prince and Miami, and one nonstop a day between Port-au-Prince and both Fort Lauderdale and New York's Kennedy Airport. American also has one flight a day on Saturdays and Sundays between Port-au-Prince and Boston.

American's last flight from Port-au-Prince, a nonstop to Miami, departed at 3:30 p.m., (local time) Feb. 26. The next flights will not operate until next Friday, March 5.

"American has a long history of commitment to its Haiti services and has done everything possible to sustain its flights into and out of Port-au-Prince under very difficult circumstances," said Peter J. Dolara, the airline's senior vice president for Miami, the Caribbean and Latin America. "However, in recent days, it has become extremely difficult for our employees to gain access to the airport, and we are now concerned that we will not have enough people at the airport to properly serve our customers and handle our aircraft at the gate. We believe the best decision for our customers and our employees is to suspend the service for a few days until the situation in Haiti improves."

American said it is initiating calls to those customers booked on the flights being cancelled to notify them of the decision and assist them with alternate arrangements. The airline said it will honor the tickets on later flights without service fees, once its Port-au-Prince service resumes, and that refunds will be granted to those who request them.

For more information, customers in the U.S. and Haiti are advised to call American Airlines at 1-800-433-7300, contact their travel agents, or visit American's Web site at www.aa.com.

FOR RELEASE: Thursday, March 4, 2004

AMERICAN AIRLINES POSTPONES RESUMPTION OF SERVICE TO HAITI UNTIL MARCH 9

MIAMI -- American Airlines said today that it is postponing resumption of service to Haiti until Tuesday, March 9. The airline suspended service to Haiti on Feb. 26 because of civil disturbances there, and had announced plans to restore its flights to and from Port-au-Prince tomorrow, March 5. However, American said it needs the additional time to coordinate with its local employees and properly prepare its terminal facilities for its customers.

American will restore service to Port-au-Prince with three daily flights -- two from Miami and one from New York's Kennedy Airport -- and a flight five days a week between Port-au-Prince and Fort Lauderdale. As previously planned, a third daily flight on the Port-au-Prince-Miami route was removed from the schedule, effective March 2.

For more information, customers in the U.S. and Haiti are advised to call American Airlines at 1-800-433-7300, contact their travel agents, or visit American's Web site at www.AA.com.

SOAMSKY:
Believe it! There is a VERY large poplulation of Hatian's in South FL, as well as in the BOS, and NY areas. These flights go out PACKED to the rafters with passengers, and the majority pay cash, day of departure. In addition most of them pay excess baggage charges, hence the A300's on a short flight out of MIA. There are NO fare sales to PAP, since there is NO competition to the United States..

No compietition? Four airlines fly MIA-PAP: American Airlines, Air d'Ayiti, Air France, and Dutch Caribbean.

Though there is no denying how profitable the flight is. Everything else you said is dead on. Also, Haitians are loyal people, and even though airlines like Air d'Ayiti offer dirt cheap fares, many stick with American Airlines regardless.

Do these airlines offer the frequencies/destinations between PAP-USA to effectively compete with AA on the route?
